Note:	Elias Martin: Although Elias Martin was born and died in Sweden he is also considered an English painter, etcher and watercolourist. Beginning his career as an apprentice cabinet-maker, Martin went to Paris in 1766 in order to study art. Two years later (1768) he first came to London and began to exhibit his art at the Royal Academy and at the Society of Artists. Elias Martin was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1770.
	Within several years Elias Martin had gained a large reputation, particularly for his watercolours. In 1772, the distinguished Horace Walpole wrote of Elias Martin: "A Swede, excellent for character and caricature in washed drawings." *
	Elias Martin left London for his native Sweden in 1780 when he received the appointment of 'Royal Painter to the King of Sweden'. However he again resided in England in 1788, first living in Bath for three years before moving again to London. Finally, Elias Martin returned for good to Stockholm in 1797, where he published engravings of his watercolour views in partnership with his brother.
	Elias Martin's fame rests strongly upon his figure studies, views and landscapes. He was equally adept at both large watercolours and miniature compositions. Not surprisingly most of Elias Martin's art is now housed in major British and Swedish collections, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, which includes the artist's famous 1771 watercolour of Westminster Bridge.
	This original watercolour miniature of "A Grouping of Antique Statuary" was found in one of Elias Martin's artist sketchbooks. The book contained a set of several mounted watercolour fantasies dealing with antique ruins and statuary, a small, unsigned landscape and a series of engraved views, some of which were based upon Elias Martin's designs. The watercolour fantasies were signed either 'E. Martin' or 'E. Martin, No. 6, London Road', thus signifying that this original watercolour was created when Elias Martin resided in England. Most of the watercolours, such as this original example, were finished in soft blue and green washes, and are valuable examples of the eighteenth century art of Elias Martin.
