Bernice Fenwick Martin: A twentieth century Canadian
painter and printmaker, Bernice Fenwick Martin studied art techniques at
the University of Toronto, under J. W. Beatty and Franklin Carmichael,
and at the University of Alberta and McMaster University. By 1945 her paintings
and prints were included in annual exhibitions of the Royal Canadian Academy,
as well as numerous other institutions. Bernice Fenwick Martin exhibited her original linocuts
and woodcuts with the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers
from 1954 to 1971. She was a full member of the Arts and Letters Club,
Toronto, the Society of Canadian Painter-Etchers and Engravers, and served
as Chairman of the Presentation Graphic Arts Print Commission (1956-1957). |
|
Many of Bernice Fenwick Martin's original prints deal
with landscape and marine views from her native Ontario to Canada's
East Coast. She spent considerable time in New Brunswick, Newfoundland
and Nova Scotia and "Tidal Rhythms" -- one of her largest and most accomplished
linocuts -- no doubt was created in one of these maritime provinces. |
