Note: | Adolphe Thodore Jules Potemont Martial 'Adolphe Potemont Martial': In the early 1850's the Paris etchings of Charles Meryon created a revolution in the arts throughout Europe. As a creative and original form of art, etching was not only rediscovered but in many quarters threatened to supplant painting as the highest form of artistic expression. Meryon paved the way for this revival and in France and England many talented artists followed in his footsteps. A native Parisian, Adolphe Potemont Martial, was one of the first and one of the best. |
Both a fine etcher and painter, Adolphe Potemont Martial studied under Cogniet and Felix Brissot. He was a regularly invited exhibitor at the prestigious Paris Salon from 1846 to 1882. By 1865 etching dominated almost all his creative output and by the year of his death he had created over three hundred fine scenes of Paris and its environs. Important art albums with original etchings by A. P. Martial include, "Vieux Paris" and "Ancien Paris". Both albums contained a collection of one hundred etchings in each portfolio, all depicting Parisian views of famous homes, city views, streets scenes, and important monuments in Paris. This original etching entitled, Laveuses a Valliere (Washerwomen at Valliere) is a brilliant example of Adolphe Potemont Martial etched art. Along with Maxime Lalanne, Adolphe Potemont Martial was considered one of the greatest Paris etchers of his time. | |
This impression of Laveuses a Valliere (Washerwomen at Valliere) was published by Dodd Mead & Company, New York in the New York publication of original etchings entitled, Etchings of French Artists. Cadart - L'Eau-Forte en 1880", Trente Eaux-Fortes Originales et Inedites par Trente des Artistes les Plus Distingues, Texte Par Jules Claretie, Paris, Vve A. Cadart, Editeur-Imprimeur, 56, Boulevard Haussman, 56, 1880. However, the 1880 impression was titled, "Laveuses A Vallieres (Creuse)", and contained Cadart's address in the lower margin and the plate number (11) in the upper right corner of the etching. "L'Eau-Forte en 1880" contained thirty original etchings by distinguished 19th century artists, such as, M. Desboutin, A Casanova, P. Heseltine, Paul Jazet, Maxime Lalanne, Edmond Rudaux, Auguste Andre Lancon, A. P. Martial, P. Billet, Edmond Yon, Felicien Rops, Adolphe Appian, Leon Lhermitte, E. Until its demise in 1867, it was responsible for publishing some of the greatest French art from this important decade. Around 1870, Cadart (along with Luquet) reopened his publishing house and continued to commission original etchings from such masters as Jongkind, Bracquemond, Manet, Ribot, Louis Monzies and many others.
