In 1843 a fine series of engravings dealing with Venetian
architecture and ornamentation was published. Issued under the title
of, Ornamenti Antichi della Citta di Venezia, the complete set consisted
of one hundred and twenty plates with an accompanying description by
Giuseppe Antonelli. Ornaments Designed by Carlo Simonetti comes from
this publication. The engravers for this series included such Italian
artists as Bozza and Buttazzan. Each plate was engraved in the early
nineteenth century 'outline' style, where total emphasis
was given to the line. This style of engraving was very effective for
architectural subjects as it made the designs stand out in precise detail. |

Original examples from the Ornamenti Antichi della
Citta di Venezia have long been sought after. Unfortunately the series was
not published in a large edition and thus these original engravings are
quite scarce. |
