An original lithograph by the famous Italian sculptor, painter and lithographer, Marino Marini, Cavalier was commissioned by XXe Siecle for its publication in June of 1967. To accompany its many articles on contemporary art this magazine usually commissioned original lithographs from two leading artists for each issue. In the case of this issue the other contributing artist was Joan Miro. Cavalier stands at the crux of Marino Marini's art. Whether in sculpture, painting or the graphic arts, the horse and rider was one of the artist's primary themes, in which he continually developed levels of highly charged, psychological imagery throughout his career. |

In the early 1920's he closely studied ancient Etruscan art and the sculpture of Arturo Martini, whom he succeeded as professor of art at the Scuola d'Arte, Monza, in 1929. During the 1930's Marino Marini travelled extensively and exhibited his work throughout Europe and the United States. At this time he met and became friends with many artists, particularly in Paris and New York. Marini, however, always remained detached from avant guard movements and followed his own artistic aims. |
During the Second World War Marini went into exile in Switzerland. At the war's end he settled permanently in Milan, assuming the position there of professor of Sculpture at the Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera. Marino Marini was the recipient of such awards as the Prize of the Quadriennale of Rome (1936), the Grand Prize for Sculpture at the Venice Biennale (1952) and Feltrinelli Prize at the Accademia dei Lincei, Rome (1954). Today the art of Marino Marini is included in such major collections as the Tate Gallery, London, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, Venice, the Galleria d'Arte Moderna, Milan, and the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture, Garden, Washington, D.C. | |
