Louis Stanislas Marin-Lavigne & Horace Vernet

Louis Stanislas Marin Lavigne and Horace Vernet - Charleroi Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Ligny

Charleroi (Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Ligny)

Louis Stanislas Marin-Lavigne's original lithograph, Charleroi is based upon a design created by the French artist, Horace Vernet. Charleroi was created about a decade after the actual battle. The Battle of Ligny (June 16, 1815) was Napoleon's last military victory. Bonaparte's French army secured a position near the Belgian town of Charleroi and thus created a rift between Wellington's English forces and those of Prussia's Blucher. Napoleon was ultimately defeated two days later at the Battle of Waterloo.

This original lithograph is printed upon fine chine colle and mounted onto a large sheet of wove paper as published for Galerie du Palais Royal between 1825 and 1829. This impression bears the official blindstamp ("Galerie lithographiee de S. A. Mgr le Duc d'Orleans") in the lower center margin. Charleroi (Napoleon Bonaparte at the Battle of Ligny) represents a fine, original example of early Napoleonic art.

Note: Louis Stanislas Marin-Lavigne: A French painter and lithographer of the early nineteenth century, Louis Stanislas Marin-Lavigne studied art in Paris under both Girodet and Horace Vernet. He began exhibiting his art at the Paris Salon in 1824 and was an annual contributor there until 1859. Louis Marin-Lavigne was awarded medals from the Salon in both 1834 and 1840.
Marin-Lavigne created lithographs after the designs of old masters (such as Raphael and Murillo) and after the designs of his contemporaries. In this latter category he was closely associated with the military art of his former teacher, Horace Vernet. Apart from Charleroi, Marin-Lavigne also created such lithographs as Vernet's Battle of Jemappes.
Charleroi originates from the series of lithographs issued under the title, Galerie lithographiee de son altesse Royale Monseigneur le Duc d'Orleans, now most usually called, Galerie du Palais Royal. In 1824, the Duke of Orleans decided to have his collection of then contemporary paintings published as a set of lithographs. Around two hundred lithographs were created by various artists and published in two parts, the first in 1825 and the second in 1829. The lithographs were printed in a limited edition and were available only to the subscribers, which numbered 487. After publication the lithographic stones were erased.
Emile Jean Horace Vernet 'Horace Vernet': A fine French painter and lithographer of military scenes, Emile Jean Horace Vernet studied art techniques mainly under his father, Carle Vernet (1758-1836). Horace Vernet grew up as a strong admirer of Napoleon and some of his finest works deal with his campaigns. In 1814 he participated in the military defence of the Barriere de Clichy and was awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honour by Emperor Napoleon.
After Bonaparte's downfall Horace Vernet continued to paint scenes that glorified his career. The Bourbon Monarchy was thus less than pleased with his art and Vernet was forced to leave the country for Rome for a period of two years. Horace Vernet returned to Paris in 1822 and soon found favour with King Charles X. He was elected a member of the Institute in 1826. Vernet served as a professor at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts until his death.
