Joseph Margulies

Joseph Margulies - Portrait of Joseph Pennell

Portrait of Joseph Pennell

Joseph Margulies's original lithograph, Portrait of Joseph Pennell is an important early example of his portrait art. Created a year before Joseph Pennell's death, it is a touching portrayal of the 'Dean of American Printmakers', the artist who so highly influenced the course of twentieth century American art. Dressed in a long overcoat and holding his paper and drawing utensils, Joseph Margulies brilliantly captures his teacher in the act of departing for a sketching expedition. No doubt he accompanied Pennell and found much more of artistic interest in the countenance of this venerable artist than in the surrounding environment. This original lithograph by Joseph Margulies was printed in 1925.

Title: Portrait of Joseph Pennell
Artist: Margulies, Joseph (Vienna, Austria, 1896 - New York City, 1984)
Date: 1925
Medium: Original Lithograph
Note: Joseph Margulies: A highly awarded American painter, etcher and lithographer, Joseph Margulies came to the United States from Austria at an early age. He studied first under the great master of lithography and etching, Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) at the Art Students' League, New York, from 1922 to 1925. Joseph Margulies then continued his artistic education at the National Academy of Design and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris. He then completed an apprenticeship with Maynard Waltner in Vienna.
For the following five decades Joseph Margulies excelled in every artistic medium. Whether in etching, lithography or in painting he established himself as perhaps the greatest portrait artist in America and was commissioned to execute the portraits of presidents and other distinguished individuals. American museums that include his original etchings and lithographs in their permanent collections are the Metropolitan Museum, New York, Yale University, the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institute.

On the verso of this original lithograph, Joseph Margulies has written, "No. 11 - Late Joseph Pennell. $30.00. by Joseph Margulies, 99 Riverside Drive, N.Y.C." (included with the documentation). The number probably refers to an exhibition number. Because Portrait of Joseph Pennell is such an early Joseph Margulies lithograph it was not published in a regular edition. It is, however, known to be very scarce and because of its great artistry and important subject matter is in much demand.
