Nathan Margolis

Nathan Margolis - Vogue Says Woman Sewing

Vogue Says (Woman Sewing)

Nathan Margolis' original lithograph, Vogue Says dates from around 1950. The subject of sewing was not unfamiliar to the artist. His wife, Adele Margolis, was an accomplished tailor and wrote a popular 1964 book on the subject entitled, The Complete Book of Tailoring for Women who like to Sew. It was also illustrated by Nathan Margolis. Vogue Says thus probably depicts the artist’s wife. It is a most beautiful figure study by this artist.

This original lithograph is printed upon fine, laid paper and with full, deckled margins as published in New York around 1950. It is signed and titled by the artist in pencil along the lower margin. Vogue Says is a fine, original example of the American lithographic art created by the Philadelphia artist, Nathan Margolis.

In 1953 both Nathan Margolis and his wife were targeted by the oppressive, 'Committee on Un-American Activities'. They pleaded the 5th Amendment and apparently avoided further damage from this twentieth century witch hunt.
Vogue Says hails from the archives of the Associated American Artists of New York. The Associated American Artists was created in the mid 1930’s and commissioned original graphic art from such great American masters as Grant Wood, Thomas Hart Benton, Reginald Marsh and many others. During the 1950’s and 1960’s it published lithographs and etchings by artists of no less distinction, such as, Jack Levine, Sidney Chafetz, Alexander Dobkin and Marion Greenwood. Its archives housed a major collection of twentieth century American art .
This original lithograph may have even been published by the A.A.A. during this period. If so, it would have been printed in an edition ranging from 125 to 250 signed impressions.
Vogue Says depicts a woman sewing away on an old fashioned black sewing machine. The subject of sewing was not unfamiliar to the artist. His wife, Adele Margolis, was an accomplished seamstress and tailor and wrote a popular 1964 book on the subject entitled, The Complete Book of Tailoring for Women who like to Sew. It was also illustrated by Nathan Margolis. Vogue Says thus probably depicts the artist’s wife. It is a most beautiful figure study by this artist.
