Mme. Eugenia Mantelli, an original watercolor created between 1905 and 1906. Underneath the portrait of the opera singer, these words appear, "Mme Mantelli, Late Prima Donna of (the) Metropolitan Opera House, New York. Direction of J. Saunders Gordon." J. Saunders Gordon directed and managed a number of opera singers and other musical acts. In 1905 and 1906 J. Saunders Gordon directed Mme. Mantelli and her “Mantelli Operatic Company”, later renamed the “Mantelli English Grand Opera Company” on an American Tour which featured the famous turn-of-the-century opera signer herself, Mme Eugenia Mantelli and other famous operatic singers as Achilli Alberti and Helkne Noldi. This operatic company performed in various cities throughout the United States and delivered acts and scenes from such operas as Il Trovatore, Carmen and Faust. |
Title: | Mme. Mantelli, Late Prima Donna of the Metropolitan Opera House, New York. Direction of J. Saunders Gordon (1905 - 1906 American Opera Tour) |
Sitter: | Mantelli, Eugenia 'Mme. Eugenia Mantelli' (Italy, 1860 - Lisbon, 1926) |
Artist: | Anonymous early 20th century artist |
Date: | c. 1905 |
Medium: | Original Watercolor |
Note: | Mme. Eugenia Mantelli: Eugenia Mantelli (1860-1926) was born in Florence and finished her studies in Milan in 1877. Listed as both a mezzo-soprano and a contralto, she made her debut in Lisbon in 1883. She then toured Germany, Italy and South America, often with the Spanish tenor, Julien Gayarre. |
Mantelli appeared at New York's Metropolitan Opera from 1984 to 1900 and during the 1902-1903 season. She also made her Covent Garden debut in 1896. After successful tours with her own opera troupe (“Mantelli Operatic Company”, later renamed the “Mantelli English Grand Opera Company”), in 1905 and 1906, Eugenia Mantelli's life and career took an unfortunate turn. She married for a second time in 1910 but her husband apparently abandoned her shortly thereafter. One of her sons died and another was mentally disabled. Eugenia Mantelli taught for a while in New York and then retired to Lisbon.
Information for the Mme. Mantelli Watercolor: It is currently not known who the artist is for this original portrait in watercolor of the famous turn-of-the-century opera signer, Eugenia Mantelli. This is not completely surprising as the portrait was meant as the genesis for a postcard and probably as a lithographic poster, and most of this kind of work was not at that time signed by the artist.
One can, however, ascertain some valuable information from the verso of this watercolor. On the lower left verso is the sticker of the U.S. Lithograph Co. (Russell-Morgan Print) Russell, Morgan and Company underwent a number of name changes. Until 1901 they also called themselves, "U.S Printing Co." They then used "U.S. Lithograph Co." from 1901 to around 1912. After that date they titled themselves, "U.S. Printing & Lithograph Co." This original watercolor thus dates from the first decade of the twentieth century as the sticker reads; "The US Lithographic Co., Russell-Morgan Print, Cincinnati & New York".
Above the sticker is a stamp with the required information filled in by fountain pen: |
|
The final information on the verso is written in graphite. In large, bold letters someone has written, "Sketch to be returned, Keep Clean." Above that in a fainter hand is the list of the six colors to be used in the lithographic printings.
Underneath this original watercolor these words appear, "Mme Mantelli, Late Prima Donna of (the) Metropolitan Opera House, New York. Direction of J. Saunders Gordon." J. Saunders Gordon directed and managed a number of opera singers and other musical acts. In 1905 and 1906 he directed Eugenia Mantelli and her English Grand Opera Company which also featured such singers as Achilli Alberti and Helkne Noldi. The Company performed in various cities throughout the United States and delivered acts and scenes from such operas as Il Trovatore, Carmen and Faust.
On the web site, HistoricOpera.com, * is an image of the postcard derived from this original watercolor. The image appears identical, but it lacks the outer border or framework. Also the wording has changed to "Coming, Mme. Mantelli, Famous Mezzo-Soprano of the Metropolitan Opera House, New York, and her "English Grand Opera Company" The watercolor thus can safely be dated between 1905 or 1906, just around Eugenia Mantelli's cross country tour.
I would think the watercolor was also meant to be printed as a lithographic poster; hence the decorative border. As well, in the lower right corner one of the printers has written what appears to be these words, "little larger". I have, however, been unable to find any larger version of the portrait.
This original watercolor is important on two fronts. Firstly it represents a beautiful contemporary portrayal of one of America's most famous prima donnas at the beginning of the twentieth century. Secondly the stamps, stickers and notations on the verso of the watercolor make it a fascinating look into the workings of a major, New York lithographic printing company of the era -- the U.S. Lithograph Co. (Russell-Morgan Company).
The American Tour 1905 - 1906: There are quite a few old newspapers dating from 1905 to 1906 advertising the “Mantelli Operatic Company”, later renamed the “Mantelli English Grand Opera Company” and the America tour with the starring role by the famous turn-of-the-century opera signer, Mme. Eugenia Mantelli. Below are several examples of the newspaper articles promoting the Mantelli Operatic company tour in America.
First to note is the Victoria Daily Colonist, Sunday, January 15, 1905. It contained an advertisement promoting the performance of the famous opera singer, Mme Mantelli at the Victoria Theatre, it read; “Tuesday Night, January 17, Popular Grand Opera in English! Mr. J. Saunders Gordon presents the Great Italian Singer Mme. Mantelli (Late Prima Donna of the Metropolitan Opera House, New York.) Supported by the 'Mantelli Operatic Company'. Scenes and Musical Gems from “Carmen and Faust”. Prices--$1.50, $1.00 .75c, .50c, : Box Seats, $2.00. Seats Now on Sale at Walt’s Music Store, Government. St.” There was another add in the same paper for Mantelli’s Own Big Company, (An All-Star Aggregation at the Crystal Theatre, opening night Jan. 16, 1905. A Bevy of Pretty Girls in Dazzling Dances. However there is no mention of Mme. Mantelli appearing in that show.
Another is the Morning Oregonian, (Portland, Oregon) Jan, 25, 1905. Their newspaper's leading line read; “Mantelli Tonight. Famous Prima Donna in “Il Trovatore” at Marquam Grand Theater...”
Further on into the next year, is the Kansas City Star, May 10, 1906. It contained an advertisement for Mme. Eugenia Mantelli and her ‘Grand Old Opera company’ (notice the change in the company name), opening at the Grand for a full week to sing Verdi’s “Il Tovatore” and parts of “Faust” and “La Favorite”. Stating that Azucena in ‘Il Trovatore’ was considered Mme. Mantelli’s greatest role and it would be as Azucena that she would sing during the greater part of the week.
This one is of more importance, as the Daily Press, Newport news, Virginia, March 4, 1906, page 11, not only included an article but also included a large photo of this original watercolor (similar to the postcard), in their daily paper promoting the show opening on March 10th. The header read; “Mme Mantelli, Distinguished mezzo-soprano, formerly of the Metropolitan Opera House, New York and her “English Grand Opera Company”.
These are just a few of the articles, photos and ads printed in major newspapers during the American 1905 - 1906 Operatic tour by Mme. Eugenia Mantelli and her operatic company. Today, her voice can still be heard in the recordings she did for the American Zonophone label.
Provenance: | This original watercolour entitled, Mme. Mantelli, Late Prima Donna of the Metropolitan Opera House, J. Saunders Gordon (1905-1906 American Tour) hails from the estate of LeRoy Latham and thence to his heirs. LeRoy Latham (1874-1938) was Chairman of Latham Lithographing Company (Latham Litho & Printing Co.). Situated in Brooklyn, New York, it was one of America's largest lithographic printing establishments in the early twentieth century. His large print collection consisted of many examples of French and British nineteenth century lithographs as well as contemporary American lithographs, etchings and wood engravings. |
