Robert Walker Macbeth - A Rainy Day

A Rainy Day

Robert Walker Macbeth's original etching "A Rainy Day", is printed upon hand-made, tissue-thin china paper and with full margins as published in London in 1887 by E. E. Leggatt, Cheapside, London. This impression is signed within the image with Walker's 'F.W.' monogramme and signed in pencil by MacBeth along the lower margin. It should here be noted that only the first proof impressions from the plate would be hand-signed by the artist at this time. The regular edition was also printed upon a less expensive paper. Altogether, this original etching represents a superb example of the etched art created by the Scottish artist, Robert Macbeth.

Note: Robert Walker MacBeth 'Robert Macbeth': A nineteenth century Scottish painter and etcher of pastoral landscapes, Robert Walker MacBeth studied art in London and then worked as an artist and illustrator for The Graphic. He began exhibiting his art at the prestigious Royal Academy in 1871, as well as in Glasgow, Liverpool and at the Royal Scottish Academy. Robert Walker MacBeth was a full member of the Royal Watercolour Society (1901), the Royal Academy (1883) and the Royal Engravers. Many of his etchings are included in the collection of the British Museum, London.
During the latter nineteenth century, Robert MacBeth created a number of fine etchings either after his designs or the designs of contemporary artists, such as Burne-Jones or Frederick Walker. A painter and illustrator, Frederick Walker (1840-1875) was one of Victorian England's greatest masters of landscapes and figure studies. Robert Walker MacBeth's etching after Walker's design was printed on fine china paper, lending luminosity to this delicate depiction.
