Note: | Alexandre Lunois: An important turn-of-the-century French lithographer and painter, Alexandre Lunois began his professional career in 1882 when he exhibited a set of reproductive lithographs in Paris. In 1888 he began exhibiting his first original lithographs. In the following year Edmond Sagot began publishing his prints and by 1890 Alexandre Lunois had established himself as a leading lithographic artist. In the 1890's he was commissioned by such important artistic publications as L'Estampe originale and L'Estampe moderne. |
Alexandre Lunois was a full member of the Societe des artistes lithographes francais and of the Peintres Orientalists. A very well traveled artist, Alexandre Lunois' vibrant depictions of the peoples of North Africa, Spain, Holland, Turkey, Arabia and Scandinavia are among his greatest works of art.
During the 1890's, Alexandre Lunois' fame rested not only upon his fine draughtsmanship but upon his then revolutionary technique. He was one of the premier artists to experiment with watercolor-like effects in lithography. He achieved these effects by applying liquid tusche with a brush to the lithographic stone. Termed, 'Wash Lithography', one can easily see the mastery of Alexandre Lunois' methods in Toilette d'une Femme Turque. Of further interest, Alexandre Lunois introduced both Vuillard and Bonnard to this delicate technique in the early 1890's. They of course made their own lithographic masterpieces during the following years.
Gazette des Beaux-Arts: The revival of etching and other methods of original printmaking as leading forms of art first took place in France in the mid nineteenth century. Sparked by the Paris etchings of Charles Meryon, French artists elevated printmaking to a creative process of art as vital as painting or sculpture. Such an outburst of artistic energy in this field had not been seen since the days of Rembrandt and other seventeenth century Dutch master etchers.
At the vanguard of this wave was the Paris based Gazette des Beaux-Arts. Beginning with its initial publication in 1859, the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers and lithographers of the day to supply original graphic art for publication. Nineteenth century editions included original prints by Daubigny, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Max Liebermann, Albert Besnard, Alexandre Lunois and others. And from the beginning of the twentieth century until it ceased publication in the early 1930's, such fine international artists as John Sloan, Donald Shaw MacLaughlan and many others contributed works of original art. With artists such as these it's easy to understand why prints from the Gazette have long been sought after.Toilette d'une Femme Turque (Young Turkish Woman Bathing) is an original lithograph by the French artist Alexander Lunois printed by R. Engelmann, Paris, and published by Gazette des Beaux-Arts, Paris in 1912.
