Jules Lion's original lithograph, Une Mauvaise Rencontre (A Bad Encounter), is the only example I have seen of his early work in France before he moved to New Orleans in either 1836 or 1837. In New Orleans Jules Lion became famous both as a portrait lithographer and painter and as the first African-American photographer. On a trip to Paris in 1839 Jules Lion learned the recently invented photographic process -- the daguerreotype -- from a partner and associate of Louis Jacques Daguerre. In March of 1840, Lion launched New Orleans' first exhibition of photographs. An original lithograph, Une Mauvaise Rencontre is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published in Paris around 1835. Bearing the lithographer's name, printers address, and the title, 'Lion del.', 'Imp. d'Aubert et de Junca', 'Une Mauvaise Rencontre', 'Appartenant a Mr. Susse.' in the lower margin, also bearing the publication information, the designers name, and plate number, 'Revue des Peintres', 'Bard (Tableau)', and 'Pl. 127.' in the upper margin. Signed by Jules Lion in the stone to the lower right. This impression is signed by Jules Lion in the stone to the lower right. Une Mauvaise Rencontre is both a scarce and important original example of the early art created by the French African American artist, Jules Lion. |

Note: | Jules Lion: An important early African-American lithographer, painter and photographer, it is not known who Jules Lion studied under in his native Paris. It is, however, recorded that he exhibited his lithographs at the Paris Salon in 1831, 1833, 1834 and 1836. During this time his lithographs appeared in major publications and reviews such as, L'Artiste and Revue des Peintres. Une Mauvaise Rencontre (A Bad Encounter) hails from the latter publication. As well, one of his lithographs was awarded an honourable mention at the Paris Exposition. |
Jules Lion moved permanently to New Orleans in either late 1836 or early 1837. Being French he was classified in Louisiana as a "Free Man of Color". Lion returned to Paris in 1839 to visit his brother, Achille Lion. In August of that year Louis Daguerre published his pamphlet on his invention of photography. Shortly thereafter Jules Lion returned to New Orleans and established that city's first daguerreotype studio. On March 15, 1840, he opened the city's first photographic exhibition, held at the St. Charles Museum.
In general, Jules Lion devoted much more time to lithography, most particularly portrait lithography. In total he created over one hundred and fifty portraits in this medium, including portrayals of such famous individuals as John James Audubon, Andrew Jackson, Martin van Buren and Zachary Taylor.
In 1848 Jules Lion opened a New Orleans art school with the Italian artist, Dominique Canova (1800-1868). At this time he also taught drawing techniques at Louisiana College. Lion's last known works were lithographed sheet music covers in support (somewhat ironically) of the Confederate cause during the Civil War.
Today the lithographic art of Jules Lion is included in the collections of the Louisiana State Museum, Louisiana State University Libraries and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington, D.C.
Jean-Auguste Bard: A French genre and history painter, Jean-Auguste Bard studied art in Paris under both Paul Delaroche and Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres. Bard exhibited his paintings at the Paris Salon from 1831 to 1861. One of his paintings is in the collection of the Louvre.
Une Mauvaise Rencontre (A Bad Encounter) was commissioned by Revue des Peintres. This Paris based publication existed from approximately 1833 to 1839 and featured original lithographs from some of France's finest artists of the era, such as Honore Daumier, Benjamin Roubaud, Jules Lion, Jean-Auguste Bard, Alphonse Bourdin, Menut Alophe, Felix Saint-Aulaire and Eugene Lepoittevin.
Gabriel Auber, Charles Philipon, & La Maison Aubert: Founded in 1829 by Charles Philipon (Lyons, 1804 - Paris, 1862), La Maison Aubert was a bookshop specializing in satires, the sale of sheet prints, and illustrated books by the likes of Curmer, Janet, Didier and Challamel with illustrations sometimes printed by Aubert. Philipon’s Brother in law Gabriel Aubert (Lyon, 1784 – 1847), a French notary, publisher, printer, and editor of La Caricature, managed the firm of La Maison Aubert. Then around 1835 Aubert founded his own lithographic printing press, Aubert et Cie., Paris and soon after, partnered with Junca, the French lithographer, publisher, and printer, publishing lithographs under the firm name, Aubert et de Junca, Paris. Together, they printed and published some of the finest French lithographs of the period, many of which were included in La Revue des Peintres which featured lithographic prints after paintings, watercolors and drawings by contemporary artists of the period.
