Note: |
Max Liebermann: One of Germany's most famous
painters, etchers and lithographers, Max Liebermann began his university
studies in Berlin in the Department of Philosophy, at the insistence of
his father. His spare moments, however, were spent in the atelier of the
painter, Karl Steffeck. Liebermann continued with his art studies after
graduating from the university and journeyed to Barbizon to study painting
and etching techniques under the great Millet. |
|
In 1873 Max Liebermann had his initial exhibition in Berlin.
It, like much of his art to come, sparked great controversy. Not since
Courbet had the art world been confronted with such a truthful realist.
A master of landscape and portrait studies, Liebermann also seriously
depicted the plight of the poor within the era of the industrial revolution.
Such was obviously not to the tastes of many Victorian era art patrons,
who could accept depictions of the poor only through the veil of sentimentality.
Nevertheless Liebermann's fine work could not be ignored and in 1897 he
was awarded the Gold Medal at the Berlin Salon. |
|
By the turn of the century Max Liebermann had emerged as
one of Germany's most famous artists. He had become one of the leading
lights of the Berlin Secession, an influential group of artists which
drew its strength from both French Impressionism and German roots. He
was also elected the first President of the Secession in 1899, |
|
Although Liebermann was opposed to many aspect of early
twentieth century Expressionism his art formed one of the primary influences
for many younger German artists, such as Lovis Corinth and Kathe Kollwitz.
This is particularly true with his great lithographs, engravings and etchings.
Max Liebermann thus stands as a most important catalyst of turn of the
century art. |
|
Throughout his career Liebermann created an outstanding
legacy of self portraits in painting, etching, engraving and lithography.
They brilliantly render the artist's observation of life's experiences
and aging with courage and utmost honesty. Such is clearly the case with
Selbstbildnis des zeichnenden (Self Portrait Drawing), which
was commissioned as the frontispiece for the book Max Liebermann,
written by Erich Hancke and published in 1922. |
