Note: | Max Liebermann: One of Germany's most famous painters, etchers and lithographers, Max Liebermann began his university studies in Berlin in the Department of Philosophy, at the insistence of his father. His spare moments, however, were spent in the atelier of the painter, Karl Steffeck. Liebermann continued with his art studies after graduating from the university and journeyed to Barbizon to study painting and etching techniques under the great Millet. |
In 1873 Max Liebermann had his initial exhibition in Berlin. It, like much of his art to come, sparked great controversy. Not since Courbet had the art world been confronted with such a truthful realist. A master of landscape and portrait studies, Liebermann also seriously depicted the plight of the poor within the era of the industrial revolution. Such was obviously not to the tastes of many Victorian era art patrons, who could accept depictions of the poor only through the veil of sentimentality.
By the turn of the century Max Liebermann had emerged as one of Germany's most famous artists. He had become one of the leading lights of the Berlin Secession, an influential group of artists which drew its strength from both French Impressionism and German roots. In turn, Liebermann's art formed one of the primary influences for the beginnings of German Expressionism. This is particularly true with his great lithographs and etchings, such as Le Tisserand. Anyone familiar with the early etchings of Kaethe Kollwitz need look no further than Le Tisserand to understand Liebermann's influence upon the development of her great graphic art. Max Liebermann thus stands as a most important catalyst of turn of the century art.
Gazette des Beaux Arts: The revival of etching as a major form of creative art took place in France in the mid nineteenth century. Sparked by the Paris etchings of Charles Meryon, French artists elevated etching from a reproductive skill to a form of art as vital as painting and sculpture. Such an outburst of artistic etching had not been seen since the days of Rembrandt and other seventeenth century Dutch master etchers.
At the vanguard of this wave was the Paris publication, Gazette des Beaux-Arts. Beginning with its initial issue in 1859, the Gazette regularly commissioned the greatest etchers of the day to supply original graphic works of art for publication. Nineteenth century editions included original etchings by Daubigny, Goya, Meryon, Whistler, Seymour Haden, Lieberman, Besnard and others. From the beginning of the twentieth century to 1930 (the year the Gazette ceased publication), such great artists as Friant, Beurdeley, Louis Jou, Georges Gobo and John Sloan were commissioned for their etchings. Some of the finest original graphic art from these years thus was published by the Gazette des Beaux-Arts.
