An original etching and aquatint by George Robert Lewis and Frederick Christian Lewis, Polyphemus,'In His Majesty's Collection' is based upon a drawing by Claude Lorrain (Claude Gellee), housed in the Royal Collection, Windsor. It is printed upon early 19th century wove paper as engraved by the Lewis brothers, G. R. Lewis and F. C. Lewis in 1807 for John Chamberlaine's, Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools, and bears the text; "In His Majesty's Collection", "From the Original Drawing by Claude Lorrain.", "Engd by F. C. & G. Lewis". It is one of the largest plates from this set; so large, in fact, that the words -- "In His Majesty's Collection" -- had to be pasted into the lower margin to accommodate the uniform size of the paper for each of the engravings. A one-eyed giant (Cyclops), Polyphemus lived on the island of Sicily. He is best known as the monster who captured Ulysses and twelve of his men. After devouring six of the captives, Ulysses and the other survivors managed to blind the giant and escape. As well, Polyphemus was in love with the sea nymph, Galatea. She, in turn, was in love with a shepherd named Acis. In this original etching and aquatint we see these lovers depicted in the hilly, Sicilian landscape, Galatea and Acis sit on the rocks at the foot of the hill and embrace under the shade of a cloak, while Polyphemus plays his pipes above them. Claude Lorraine also depicts a view of Mount Aetna and a bay with ships in the distance. Claude Lorrain's Polyphemus is a fine, original example of the etched landscape art created by the British artists, George Robert Lewis and Frederick Christian Lewis.

Note: George Robert Lewis 'G. R. Lewis': The younger brother of Frederick Christian Lewis, George Robert Lewis studied at the Royal Academy, under Henry Fuseli. He was equally known for his engravings and paintings and he exhibited annually at the Royal Academy from 1820 to 1859. G. R. Lewis first worked with his elder brother before making his mark as both an illustrator and publisher. His illustrated works include Muscles of the Human Frame (1820), Illustrations of Kilpeck Church (1842), Early Fonts of England (1843) and Description of Shobdon Church (1856). Also, George Robert Lewis was commissioned by John Chamberlaine to engrave several portrait and landscape scenes for the series of original engravings based upon the designs of other old masters, such as, Raphael, Michelangelo, Claude Lorrain, Poussin, Canaletto and others. Polyphemus, the story of a one-eyed giant 'A Cyclops' is a striking landscape scene created by both G. R. Lewis and F. C. Lewis, based upon a drawing created by Claude Lorrain.
  Frederick Christian Lewis 'F. C. Lewis': An eminent early nineteenth century painter, etcher, aquatint and stipple engraver, F. C. Lewis was a pupil of J. C. Stadler and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He first gained notice in 1803 with his aquatints after Thomas Girtin’s designs and published under the title of, Twenty of the most Picturesque Views in Paris and its Environs. Then, from 1808 to 1823, he became one of the principal engravers for William Ottley’s famous volumes on Renaissance art, The Italian School of Design. Lewis also contributed etchings for J.M.W. Turner’s, Liber Studiorum , as well as creating commissioned engravings after the designs of Landseer and Flaxman.
  During his successful career, Frederick Christian Lewis exhibited his art at the Royal Academy (1802-1853), the British Institution (1817-1853), the Society of British Artists (1824-1846) and at the Old Water-Colour Society. He was also Engraver of Drawings to King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria.
  F. C. Lewis was a greatly skilled and versatile printmaker. His abilities to render painting and drawing techniques into the etched medium, in particular, set his art on a high plane. His contributions (from approximately 1805 to 1812) to Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools are particularly noteworthy. Aquatints, stipple engravings, etchings and soft grounds bearing his name are all found within this set. Polyphemus bears the names of both F. C. Lewis and G. R. Lewis.
  Claude Lorrain (Claude Gellee): Undoubtedly Claude Gellee, also listed as Claude Lorrain ranks as one of the greatest masters of landscape art. He moved to Rome at about the age of twelve and first trained as a pastry-cook in the household of the artist, Agostino Tassi. Claude Lorrain then became his studio assistant and completed his studies in Naples, under Gottfried Wals
  Claude’s early paintings and drawings reflect the dominant Mannerist style of mid seventeenth century Italian art. Beginning around 1640, however, he began to develop his now famous style were the pastoral serenity and the antique grandeur of the Roman countryside is paramount, such is the case with this Sicilian landscape scene entitled, Polyphemus. Nowhere was his influence more deeply felt than in England where such great artists as Wilson and J. M. W. Turner modeled much of their art upon his work.

The scene depicted here deals with the same subject as Richard Earlom's mezzotint engraving (No. 141), based upon an original drawing by Claude Lorraine created in 1796, in the collection of the Duke of Devonshire, and described as "A View of the Sea, with Rocks by the Side, with the Story of Acis and Galatea". However, the mezzotint is clearly different, and shows a wider and closer view of the sea which separates the hill where Polyphemus appears. It depicts a full view of the trees to the left (two intertwined trees and part of a third), all visible structures are too far to distinguish, and unlike this work, the mezzotint depicts cupid sleeping under the shade of a makeshift tent with the lovers.
  John Chamberlaine (British, c. 1745 - 1812): In February, 1791, John Chamberlaine was appointed Keeper of Drawings and Medals to the King. As curator to his Majesty’s Collection, Chamberlaine’s greatest achievement was to publish engravings and etchings based upon these famous old master acquisitions. Between March, 1792 and February, 1800, John Chamberlaine published eighty-four stipple engravings based upon Holbein’s portrait drawings. All but four of these engravings were created by Francesco Bartolozzi, who held the title of, ‘Historical Engraver to his Majesty’.
  In 1796, John Chamberlaine initiated another important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection, entitled, Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci. The engravers for this series were Francesco Bartolozzi and his followers. The following year Chamberlaine began his final set under the title of, Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty’s Collection. In the following years this last set was expanded to include engravings based upon the designs of other old masters, such as, Raphael 'Raffaello Santi', Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonaroti, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Antonio Canal 'Canaletto' and other major artist. For this opus, John Chamberlaine commissioned such leading engravers as Francesco Bartolozzi (1727 - 1815), Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Frederick Christian Lewis (1779 - 1856), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840) and others to worked upon this project.
  The engravings for the 1796 "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci" and the 1797 Engravings from the "Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty’s Collection", were both completed in 1812. At this point John Chamberlaine combined the two sets under the general title of "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Taking eighteen years to complete, the entire series consisted of sixty-six plates, with the exception of a few sets which contained additional plates (not listed in the index), and bearing the publication date of 1795 or 1796. In order to simulate varying drawing methods, the artists used a wide ranging array of printmaking techniques such as stippling, soft ground etching and aquatinting, often employing either separately printed color plates or hand-coloring. As a result, some of the most complex and technically accomplished etchings and engravings of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are found within this scarce and monumental collection.
