Frederick Christian Lewis's original soft ground etching, "Virgin & Child & St. John, 'In His Majesty's Collection'" is based upon a drawing by Michelangelo Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (Michelangelo), housed in the Royal Collection. This impression is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins as created by F. C. Lewis in 1811 for John Chamberlaine's set of original engravings published under the general title of "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools", bearing the text; "Mich. I Angelo delt.", "F. C. Lewis Sculp.", "In His Majesty's Collection", and the publication line, "Published April. 17. 1811 by J. Chamberlaine Scotland Yard" in the lower margin, and numbered, "Pl. LXIII" in the upper right corner. The scene depicts the Virgin holding the Christ Child on her lap, with St. John the Baptist as a young boy standing by them. Michelangelo's "Virgin and Child and St. John" represents a strong, original example of the etched art created by the British artist, Frederick Christian Lewis.

Jakob Rosenberg writes, "Perhaps 'powerful' is the most adequate word to signify Michelangelo's superhuman intensity of expression and monumentality of vision. But many other characteristics come to mind, such as his profundity, his universality, his unfailing sense of beauty and proportion, his heroization of the human figure and its dramatic action in order to express inner life -- to mention only a few. Michelangelo's contemporaries did not call him 'the divine' without good reason; they were awed and even frightened by the 'terribilita' of his artistic visions" *

Note: Frederick Christian Lewis 'F. C. Lewis': An eminent early nineteenth century painter, etcher, aquatint and stipple engraver, Frederick Christian Lewis was a pupil of J. C. Stadler and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He first gained notice in 1803 with his aquatints after Thomas Girtin's designs and published under the title of, "Twenty of the most Picturesque Views in Paris and its Environs". Then, from 1808 to 1823, he became one of the principal engravers for William Ottley's famous volumes on Renaissance art, "The Italian School of Design". Frederick Christian Lewis also contributed etchings for J.M.W. Turner's, "Liber Studiorum", well as creating commissioned engravings after the designs of Landseer and Flaxman.
  During his successful career, F. C. Lewis exhibited his art at the Royal Academy (1802-1853), the British Institution (1817-1853), the Society of British Artists (1824-1846) and at the Old Water-Colour Society. Frederick Christian Lewis was also appointed Engraver of Drawings to King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria.
  Frederick Christian Lewis was a greatly skilled and versatile printmaker. His abilities to render painting and drawing techniques into the etched medium, in particular, set his art on a high plane. His contributions (from approximately 1805 to 1812) to "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools" are particularly noteworthy. Aquatints (many printed in colors and sepia tones), stipple engravings, etchings and soft grounds bearing his name are all found within this set.
  Michelangelo 'Michelangelo Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni': Along with Leonardo and Raphael, Michelangelo stands at the forefront of High Renaissance art. A superb painter, sculptor and architect, Michelangelo Buonarroti lived and worked in both Florence and Rome. His masterworks in sculpture include the Pieta, David and Moses, while his frescoes for the Sistine Chapel ("The Last Judgment" and "The Creation of Man") are arguably the most famous paintings of all time. Michelangelo Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni (Michelangelo) was born in Caprese, 1475 and died in Rome, 1564.
  Of Michelangelo’s drawings Jakob Rosenberg states, “Even though small in number, the drawings give a distinct impression of Michelangelo’s unique quality and of his development as a draughtsman. There are no signs that he drew for drawing’s sake, as one sometimes feels with Leonardo, certainly with Durer and Rembrandt, Watteau and Goya. But to Michelangelo, as a true Florentine, drawing was a vital function in the artistic process and is always expressive of a significant stage in his creations. Even the rare very finished drawings do not lack his basic qualities of strength and articulation, or grandeur of vision.” **

  John Chamberlaine (British, c. 1745 - 1812): In February, 1791, John Chamberlaine (London, 1745 - 1812) was appointed Keeper of Drawings and Medals to the King. As curator to his Majesty's Collection, Chamberlaine's greatest achievement was to publish engravings and etchings based upon these famous old master acquisitions. Between March, 1792 and February, 1800, John Chamberlaine published eighty-four stipple engravings based upon Holbein's portrait drawings. All but four of these engravings were created by Francesco Bartolozzi, who held the title of, 'Historical Engraver to his Majesty'.
  In 1796, John Chamberlaine initiated another important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection, entitled, "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci". The engravers for this series were Francesco Bartolozzi and his followers. The following year Chamberlaine began his final set under the title of, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection". In the following years this last set was expanded to include engravings based upon the designs of other old masters, such as, Raphael 'Raffaello Santi', Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonaroti, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Antonio Canal 'Canaletto' and other major artist. For this opus, John Chamberlaine commissioned such leading engravers as Francesco Bartolozzi (1727 - 1815), Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Frederick Christian Lewis (1779 - 1856), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840) and others to worked upon this project.
  The engravings for the 1796 "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci" and the 1797 Engravings from the "Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection", were both completed in 1812. At this point John Chamberlaine combined the two sets under the general title of "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Taking eighteen years to complete, the entire series consisted of sixty-six plates, with the exception of a few sets which contained additional plates (not listed in the index), and bearing the publication date of 1795 or 1796. In order to simulate varying drawing methods, the artists used a wide ranging array of printmaking techniques such as stippling, soft ground etching and aquatinting, often employing either separately printed color plates or hand-coloring. As a result, some of the most complex and technically accomplished etchings and engravings of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are found within this scarce and monumental collection.
