Frederick Christian Lewis & Sir Thomas Lawrence

Frederick Christian Lewis and Sir Thomas Lawrence - Portrait of Miss Mary Bloxam as a Young Lady

Portrait of Miss Mary Bloxam as a Young Lady

Frederick Christian Lewis's 1837 "Portrait of Miss Mary Bloxam as a Young Lady" is an original stipple and soft ground etching designed by England's greatest portrait artist of the day, Sir Thomas Lawrence. F. C. Lewis uses both soft ground and stippling to capture Thomas Lawrence's subtle tonal values. It was touched by highlights of hand coloring before publication. This original impression is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins as published in London by Ackermann and Co. for Sir Thomas Lawrence’s, Cabinet of Gems in 1837.

Miss Mary Bloxam, (Mary Isabella Bloxam, born c. 1808) was Sir Thomas Lawrence’s niece, daughter of Mary Ann Lawrence (1767 - 1835) and the Reverend. Richard Rouse Bloxam, (1765 - 1840), schoolmaster at Rugby School. This is the second portrait of Mary Bloxam included in the portfolio, (portrait of a lady, head and shoulders to the left, head almost in profile). The other portrayed Mary as an infant. Note: The British Museum lists an impression of Miss Mary Bloxam in its permanent collection.

Note: Frederick Christian Lewis 'F. C. Lewis': An eminent early nineteenth century painter, etcher, aquatint and stipple engraver, F. C. Lewis was a pupil of J. C. Stadler and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He first gained notice in 1803 with his aquatints after Thomas Girtin’s designs which were published under the title of, Twenty of the most Picturesque Views in Paris and its Environs. Afterwards, from 1808 to 1823, he became one of the principal engravers for William Ottley’s famous volumes on Renaissance art, The Italian School of Design. Lewis also contributed etchings for J.M.W. Turner’s, Liber Studiorum , Imitations of Sir Thomas Lawrence’s Drawings, Sir Thomas Lawrence’s, Cabinet of Gems, as well as creating commissioned engravings after the designs of Landseer and Flaxman.
During his successful career, F. C. Lewis exhibited his art at the Royal Academy (1802-1853), the British Institution (1817-1853), the Society of British Artists (1824-1846) and at the Old Water-Colour Society. Frederick Christian Lewis was also Engraver of Drawings to King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria.
  F. C. Lewis was a greatly skilled and versatile printmaker. His abilities to render painting and drawing techniques into the etched medium, in particular, set his art on a high plane. For this reason many of Lewis's finest etchings were after the works of England's greatest portrait artist of the day, Sir Thomas Lawrence.
This striking stipple and soft ground etching hails from an 1837 portfolio entitled, Sir Thomas Lawrence’s Cabinet of Gems, with biographical and descriptive memorials by P. G. Patmore, (Peter George Patmore, 1786 - 1855), published for the proprietor H. T. Ryall by Ackermann and Co., London with twelve original etchings by F. C. Lewis. The portraits are based upon the sketches made at various times, by Sir T. Lawrence in his own family circle. Each work was etched by F. C. Lewis using both soft ground and stippling to capture Lawrence’s subtle tonal values. The etchings were all touched by highlights of hand colouring before publication, such as this original example of Sir Thomas Lawrence's portrait of Miss Mary Bloxam.
Sir Thomas Lawrence sketched several portraits of his niece Mary Isabella Bloxam at different stages of her life. Two of these portraits were included in The Cabinet of Gems. The first was the portrait of an infant wearing a frilled cap, listed under the title, Mary Isabella Bloxam. The second portrait depicts Mary Bloxam as a young woman (head and shoulders to the left, head almost in profile), it is listed under the title, Miss Mary Bloxam.
The British Museum lists an impression of Miss Mary Bloxam, (Mary Isabella Bloxam, portrait of a young lady, head and shoulders to the left, head almost in profile) in its permanent collection. Registration number S,9.40, britishmuseum.org. The museum impression is an engraved portrait, artist proof before letters, published in 1831 donated by Frederick Christian Lewis Sr.
Sir Thomas Lawrence: The son of an inn keeper, Thomas Lawrence became one of England's greatest portrait artists of any age. As an early child he showed exceptional ability for drawing and, at the age of ten, gained a reputation for his pencil portraits of guests at his father's inn. Such celebrities as Mrs. Siddons had their portraits drawn by this self-taught, child prodigy.
In 1787, Thomas Lawrence moved to London. The following year (at age nineteen) his first painted portrait was accepted for the Royal Academy exhibition. Thomas Lawrence was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1791, a full Academician in 1794, and President in 1820. He was also a full member of the Academies of Vienna, Florence, Venice and Copenhagen. In 1825, the King of France gave him the Cross of the Legion of Honour.
Throughout his life, Sir Thomas Lawrence dedicated his work to the art of the portrait, in both oil and pencil. As spectacular as his paintings are, his pencil drawings hold a special place in the history of portraiture. More intimate and spontaneous, they are masterworks of expression and emotion. F. C. Lewis's brilliant etchings after Thomas Lawrence's drawings were published seven years after Lawrence's death.
Miss Mary Bloxam: Mary Isabella Bloxam, (born c. 1808) was Sir Thomas Lawrence's niece, daughter of Mary Ann Lawrence (1767 - 1835) and the Revd. Richard Rouse Bloxam, (1765 - 1840), schoolmaster at Rugby School. Mary had six brothers and three sisters, Richard Rowland Bloxam, Thomas Lawrence Bloxam, Henry Bloxam, Anne Bloxam, Andrew Bloxam, Susan Bloxam, Lucy Bloxam, Mathew Bloxam, and John Rouse Bloxam.
