Frederick Christian Lewis's original aquatint engraving, "Bacchanalia, 'In His Majesty's Collection'" (A Dance before a Herm of Pan, or Priapus) is based upon a drawing by Nicolas Poussin housed in England's Royal Collection at Windsor. It is a strong example of his mastery of the aquatint medium. Printed in sepia tones, F. C. Lewis employs overlaying aquatint grounds to effectively render the nuances of Nicolas Poussin's wash drawing. This engraving was commissioned by John Chamberlain for the set of original engravings and etchings published under the general title, "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman, Florentine and Venetian Schools" completed in 1812, and is listed within the index page under the title, "Sacrifice". The scene depicts a 'Bacchanalia' with a group of men and women dancing and taking part in a celebration in honour of Bacchus, the God of wine. The Bacchantes were the followers of Bacchus or Dionysus. Pan was the god of shepherds and flocks. and the god, Priapus, also called Triphallus is said to have been the son of Bacchus and Venus. This impression is printed upon early 19th century wove paper with the 'J. Whatman' watermark and with full margins, bearing the text; "From the Original Drawing by N. Poussin.", "Engraved by Engrav'd by F. C. Lewis.", "In His Majesty's Collection", and the publication line, "Published by I. Chamberlaine London" under the image, and numbered, "Pl. XLII" in the upper right corner as created by F. C. Lewis in London around 1809. It a striking example of the original engraving and aquatint created by the British artist, Frederick Christian Lewis and the designs of the French artist, Nicolas Poussin. |

Note: | Frederick Christian Lewis 'F. C. Lewis': An eminent early nineteenth century painter, etcher, aquatint and stipple engraver, F. C. Lewis was a pupil of J. C. Stadler and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He first gained notice in 1803 with his aquatints after Thomas Girtin's designs and published under the title of, "Twenty of the most Picturesque Views in Paris and its Environs". Then, from 1808 to 1823, he became one of the principal engravers for William Ottley's famous volumes on Renaissance art, "The Italian School of Design". Frederick Christian Lewis also contributed etchings for J.M.W. Turner's, "Liber Studiorum", as well as creating commissioned engravings after the designs of Landseer and Flaxman. |
During his successful career, F. C. Lewis exhibited his art at the Royal Academy (1802-1853), the British Institution (1817-1853), the Society of British Artists (1824-1846) and at the Old Water-Colour Society. Frederick Christian Lewis was also Engraver of Drawings to King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria.
Frederick Christian Lewis was a greatly skilled and versatile printmaker. His abilities to render painting and drawing techniques into the etched medium, in particular, set his art on a high plane. His contributions (from approximately 1805 to 1812) to "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools" are particularly noteworthy. Aquatints (many printed in colors and sepia tones), stipple engravings, etchings and soft grounds bearing his name are all found within this set.
Nicolas Poussin: The father of French Classical painting, Nicolas Poussin settled in Paris in 1612. He studied under various painters but his primary influence were the paintings and engravings of Raphael and his school and Roman statuary and reliefs housed in the royal collection. He first arrived to Rome in 1624 and worked for a time in the studio of Domenichino. During this early period, Nicolas Poussin began to abandon the dominant Baroque style in favour of a more restrained, classical manner.
By 1630, Nicolas Poussin began to concentrate upon antique themes, moving towards a classicism akin to Raphael and Romano. After living in Paris for a period of two years (1640-42), Nicolas Poussin returned permanently to Rome and developed his now famous method of painting. One scholar writes, “During the next decade he painted for such patrons the works that in his own day were considered to be his finest achievement and are still recognized as the purest exemplification of the classical spirit. The emphasis is on clarity of conception, moral solemnity, and obedience to rule.” *
Nicolas Poussin created such works as The Dance in Honour of Pan, A Bacchanalian Feast, The Education of Bacchus, The Birth of Bacchus, The Sleeping Venus and Satyrs and others. He continued to be the inspiration for classically minded painters through the following centuries. Among many other painters, Cezanne declared that Poussin was a primary influence upon his art.
Bacchanalia, 'In His Majesty's Collection' (A Dance before a Herm of Pan, or Priapus): An original aquatint engraving, "Bacchanalia, 'In His Majesty's Collection' is based upon a drawing, by Nicolas Poussin housed in England's Royal Collection at Windsor. It is a strong example of the mastery of the aquatint medium of Frederick Christian Lewis. Printed in sepia tones, F. C. Lewis employs overlaying aquatint grounds to effectively render the nuances of Nicolas Poussin's wash drawing. The scene depicts a 'Bacchanalia', a celebration in honor of Bacchus, the 'God of Wine'. It was created by F. C. Lewis in 1809 for John Chamberlaine's set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection entitled, "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools", and bears the text; "From the Original Drawing by N. Poussin.", "Engraved by Engrav'd by F. C. Lewis.", "In His Majesty's Collection", and the publication line, "Published by I. Chamberlaine London" under the image, and numbered, "Pl. XLII" in the upper corner, and is listed within the index page under the title, "Sacrifice" . This is a striking example of the original engraving and aquatint created by the British artist, Frederick Christian Lewis and the designs of the French artist, Nicolas Poussin.
The index page of the "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools" lists this original F. C. Lewis aquatint engraving under the title, "Sacrifice". However it is based upon a wash drawing by Nicolas Poussin listed as, A Dance before a Herm of Pan, or Priapus housed in England's Royal Collection at Windsor, Royal Collection Trust, reference number RCIN 911979. The scene depicts a group of men and women taking part in the revels in honour of Bacchus. A 'Bacchanalia' is a Roman festival of Bacchus celebrated with song, dance and various other decadent pleasures. The Bacchantes were the followers, (both men and women) of Bacchus (Bachus, also spelt Bacus), or Dionysus. They were characterized by licentiousness and revelry. Bacchus was the God of wine, son of Zeus (Jupiter) and Semele. This scene is also very similar to a painting by Nicolas Poussin created in (1631-1633), housed in the National Gallery, London, listed under the title, Bacchanal before the Statue of Pan. The statue in this painting is similar to the one seen to the right of both the drawing and this engraving (Pan was a god of shepherds and flocks). There is another painting of a similar subject listed as Hymen (Hymenaios), disguised as a woman at a sacrifice to Priapus, or dance in honour of Priapus (1634-1638), housed at the Sao Paulo, Museum of Art which depicts a 'bacchanalia', with the statue of Priapus as the central figure. Again, it is the same statue previously described as 'Pan'. However, it is possible the John Chamberlaine entitled this engraving "Sacrifice" after the later painting. Priapus, also called Triphallus is believed to be the deity, protector of vineyards and gardens, and is said to have been the son of Bacchus and Venus. The word Priapus may be translated as 'principal of production' or 'fecundation of Apis'.
John Chamberlaine (British, c. 1745 - 1812): In February, 1791, John Chamberlaine (London, 1745 - 1812) was appointed Keeper of Drawings and Medals to the King. As curator to his Majesty's Collection, Chamberlaine's greatest achievement was to publish engravings and etchings based upon these famous old master acquisitions. Between March, 1792 and February, 1800, John Chamberlaine published eighty-four stipple engravings based upon Holbein's portrait drawings. All but four of these engravings were created by Francesco Bartolozzi, who held the title of, 'Historical Engraver to his Majesty'.
In 1796, John Chamberlaine initiated another important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection, entitled, Imitations of "Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci". The engravers for this series were Francesco Bartolozzi and his followers. The following year, John Chamberlaine began his final set under the title of, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection". In the following years this last set was expanded to include engravings based upon the designs of other old masters, such as, Raphael 'Raffaello Santi', Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonaroti, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Antonio Canal 'Canaletto' and other major artist. For this opus, John Chamberlaine commissioned such leading engravers as Francesco Bartolozzi (1727 - 1815), Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Frederick Christian Lewis (1779 - 1856), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840) and others to worked upon this project.
The engravings for the 1796 Imitations of "Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci" and the 1797 Engravings from the "Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection", were both completed in 1812. At this point John Chamberlaine combined the two sets under the general title of "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Taking eighteen years to complete, the entire series consisted of sixty-six plates, with the exception of a few sets which contained additional plates (not listed in the index), and bearing the publication date of 1795 or 1796. In order to simulate varying drawing methods, the artists used a wide ranging array of printmaking techniques such as stippling, soft ground etching and aquatinting, often employing either separately printed color plates or hand-coloring. As a result, some of the most complex and technically accomplished etchings and engravings of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are found within this scarce and monumental collection.
