Frederick Christian Lewis & Canaletto, Giovanni Antonio Canal

Frederick Christian Lewis and Canaletto Giovanni Antonio Canal - Arches In His Majesty's Collection Architectural View of a Capriccio from the Forum of Augustus in Rome

Arches 'In His Majesty's Collection' (Architectural View of a Capriccio from the Forum of Augustus in Rome)

Frederick Christian Lewis's original aquatint and etching, "Arches 'In His Majesty's Collection' (Architectural View of a Capriccio from the Forum of Augustus in Rome)" is a magnificent example of his printmaking techniques. In order to simulate the tones of Canaletto's (Giovanni Antonio Canal), pen and ink drawing, an architectural view with arches, he employed layers of aquatint to create strong contrasts of light, dark and shade. F. C. Lewis was one of the first great practitioners of the aquatint medium. This impression is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins as created in London by F. C. Lewis in 1811 for John Chamberlaine's set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection entitled, "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Bearing the text; "Canaletti delt.", "F. C. Lewis fc.", "In His Majesty's Collection", and the publication line, "Published April 17 1811. by J. Chamberlaine Scotland Yard.", in the lower margin, and numbered, "Pl. LXVI" in the upper left corner. This architectural view is described as a 'capriccio' (a work incorporating both real and imaginary subjects). The scene depicts various structures from the Forum of Augustus in Rome with part of the Arco dei Pantani to the left, and the Temple of Mars Ultor behind, and it has been noted that the two archways which appear in the center to the right are fictitious. It is a fine, original example of the graphic art created by the British artist, Frederick Christian Lewis and the designs of the Italian artist, Giovanni Antonio Canal, also known as 'Canaletto'.

Note: Frederick Christian Lewis 'F. C. Lewis': An eminent early nineteenth century painter, etcher, aquatint and stipple engraver, Frederick Christian Lewis was a pupil of J. C. Stadler and studied at the Royal Academy Schools. He first gained notice in 1803 with his aquatints after Thomas Girtin's designs and published under the title of, "Twenty of the most Picturesque Views in Paris and its Environs". Then, from 1808 to 1823, he became one of the principal engravers for William Ottley's famous volumes on Renaissance art, "The Italian School of Design". F. C. Lewis also contributed etchings for J.M.W. Turner's, "Liber Studiorum", as well as creating commissioned engravings after the designs of Landseer and Flaxman.
During his successful career, Frederick Christian Lewis exhibited his art at the Royal Academy (1802-1853), the British Institution (1817-1853), the Society of British Artists (1824-1846) and at the Old Water-Colour Society. He was also Engraver of Drawings to King George IV, King William IV and Queen Victoria.
Frederick Christian Lewis was a greatly skilled and versatile printmaker. F. C. Lewis's abilities to render painting and drawing techniques into the etched medium, in particular, set his art on a high plane. His contributions (from approximately 1805 to 1812) to "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools" are particularly noteworthy. Aquatints (many printed in colors and sepia tones, such as this architectural view of the arches), stipple engravings, etchings and soft grounds bearing his name are all found within this set.
Canaletto 'Giovanni Antonio Canal': By the mid eighteenth century Canaletto (1697-1768) had established himself as Italy's greatest view-painter and etcher. The prime subject for both his paintings and etchings was, of course, Venice, and through his innovative art it became Europe's most famous city.
In his topographical etchings and paintings Canaletto set the standard. One scholar writes, "Even in its more mechanical phases his work is much more than a mere factual record; and by his unobtrusive skill in design, and his power of suffusing his work with light and air, he may justly be regarded as one of the precursors of 19th-century landscape painting." * With its brilliant use of light and shade and architectural elements, these words clearly apply to Arches 'In His Majesty's Collection' (Architectural View of a Capriccio from the Forum of Augustus in Rome).
Arches 'In His Majesty's Collection' (Architectural View of a Capriccio from the Forum of Augustus in Rome): This original aquatint and etching was created by Frederick Christian Lewis in 1811 for John Chamberlaine's set of original engraving published under the title, "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". It is the sixty sixth plate (LXVI), listed under the title, "Arches". The aquatint is based upon a pen and ink drawing created by the famous artist, Canaletto 'Giovanni Antonio Canal' which is housed in the Royal Collection, Windsor (Royal Collection Trust inventory number, RCIN 907519). This original graphic work of art bears the text; "Canaletti delt.", "F. C. Lewis fc.", "In His Majesty's Collection", and the publication line, "Published April 17 1811. by J. Chamberlaine Scotland Yard.", in the lower margin, and numbered, "Pl. LXVI" in the upper left corner. It is a magnificent example of the printmaking techniques of Frederick Christian Lewis. In order to simulate the tones of Canaletto's drawing, he employed layers of aquatint to create strong contrasts of light, dark and shade. F. C. Lewis was one of the first great practitioners of the aquatint medium. The British Museum, London includes an impression of this engraving in its permanent collection, Museum number 1925, 0422.60.
John Chamberlaine (British, c. 1745 - 1812): In February, 1791, John Chamberlaine (London, 1745 - 1812) was appointed Keeper of Drawings and Medals to the King. As curator to his Majesty's Collection, John amberlaine,s greatest achievement was to publish engravings and etchings based upon these famous old master acquisitions. Between March, 1792 and February, 1800, John Chamberlaine published eighty-four stipple engravings based upon Holbein's portrait drawings. All but four of these engravings were created by Francesco Bartolozzi, who held the title of, 'Historical Engraver to his Majesty'.
In 1796, John Chamberlaine initiated another important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection, entitled, "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci". The engravers for this series were Francesco Bartolozzi and his followers. The following year, John Chamberlaine began his final set under the title of, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection". In the following years this last set was expanded to include engravings based upon the designs of other old masters, such as, Raphael 'Raffaello Santi', Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonaroti, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Antonio Canal 'Canaletto' and other major artist. For this opus, John Chamberlaine commissioned such leading engravers as Francesco Bartolozzi (1727 - 1815), Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Frederick Christian Lewis (1779 - 1856), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840) and others to worked upon this project.
The engravings for the 1796 "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci" and the 1797 Engravings from the "Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection", were both completed in 1812. At this point John Chamberlaine combined the two sets under the general title of "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Taking eighteen years to complete, the entire series consisted of sixty-six plates, with the exception of a few sets which contained additional plates (not listed in the index), and bearing the publication date of 1795 or 1796. In order to simulate varying drawing methods, the artists used a wide ranging array of printmaking techniques such as stippling, soft ground etching and aquatinting, often employing either separately printed color plates or hand-coloring. As a result, some of the most complex and technically accomplished etchings and engravings of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are found within this scarce and monumental collection. F. C. Lewis's original aquatint and etching Arches 'In His Majesty's Collection' hails from this set.
