Arthur James Lewis's original etching, The Cornfield was commissioned by the Junior Etching Club for its 1862 publication, Passages from Modern English Poets. In total the publication contained forty-seven etchings by member artists. Each etching was accompanied by one or several poems written by various authors. For A. J. Lewis's original etching the adjoining poem by Mary Howitt was, appropriately, The Cornfield. Mary Howitt, nee Mary Botham (Coleford, England, 1799 - Rome, Italy, 1888 was the author of such books as, "The Spider and the Fly" (1829), "Wood Leighton, or a Year in the Country" (1836), "Hymns and Fireside Verses" (1839), "The Heir of West Way Ian" (1847, "The Cost of Caergwyn" (1864), etc. The final stanza of her poem is quoted below: "O golden fields of bending corn, An original etching, The Cornfield is printed upon wove paper and with full margins and bears the artist's name, "A. J. Lewis" and the publisher's date and name, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate as published in Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. This is a fine, original example of the landscape & etched art created by the British artist, Arthur James Lewis. |

Note: | Arthur James Lewis 'Arthur Lewis': A nineteenth century landscape and portrait artist, Arthur James Lewis regularly exhibited his art at such London venues as the Royal Academy, the British Institution, the Grosvenor Gallery and the New Gallery, from 1848 to 1893. Although he established his reputation primarily with his paintings and watercolours, A. J. Lewis was very active as an etcher during the early 1860's. For Passages from Modern English Poets, for example, he contributed four original etchings. Their titles are A Spring Morning, Spring in the Meadows, The Mountain Stream and The Cornfield. |
Arthur James Lewis was a full member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of etching in England. Other members included the British artists, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Charles Keene, Matthew James Lawless, Walter Severn, Henry Stacy Marks, Frederick Smallfield, William Gale, Joseph Clark, Henry Clarence Whaite and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and the above artists all contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862. | |

Howitt's Illustrated Library for the Young (1861), "The Cost of Caergwyn" (1864), "Tales for All Seasons" (1881) and many, many other fine works. For the last three years of its publication, Mary Howitt was the editor and contributor of articles for "Fisher's Drawing Room Scrap-Book", in 10 vols (1834-1843). With their numerous translations of Danish, Swedish and German literature, Mary, along with her husband, William Howitt, an eminent author himself, were most instrumental in making authors such as Hans Christian Anderson, Fredrika, Bremer, Carl Goldenchmidt, Sophie von Knorring, and other important novelists accessible to English readers. The complete poem entitled The Corn-fields along appeared in her book," Fireside Verses", Darton and Clark, London, 1844 " It also appeared in the States in, "Mary Howitt's Story Book: With Illustrations", Mary Botham Howitt, published by C. S. Francis & Co., New York, 252 Broadway., Boston, J. H. Francis, 128 Washington Street., 1850 page 138, 139, & 140. Note: the title of the poem in both books is "Corn-Fields", not "Corn-Field". |

The second poem to accompany this original Arthur James Lewis etching is, The Harvest-Home written by Thomas Haynes Bayly. The first stanza of his poem is quoted below. "The last golden sheaf is borne off from the meadow, Thomas Haynes Bayly (Bath, 1797 - Cheltenham, 1839): An English author, Thomas Haynes Bayly was popular song writer and a highly regarded poet, novelist and playwright in his day. The 1831 "New Monthly Magazine, and Literary Journal" includes an article on page 172 that reads; "Musical Publications: "Songs for the Grave and Gay", the Poetry written and Melodies selected by Thomas Haynes Bayly, Esq. The lyric talent of Mr. Bayly has for some years past obtained so much of the public favour, that his name alone serves as a passport to publications of the above description....". The oeuvre of T. H. Bayly was diverse; it included, poetry, novels, songs, ballads, plays, and various other forms of literature. He was the author of such fine compositions as, "Parliamentary letters, and other poems" (1818), "The Tribute of a Friend (1819), Miniature Lyrics" (1825), "Isabel", "Come, open your casement, my dear", "I'd be a Butterfly", (1826), "The Aylmers", a novel (1827), "Psychae; or, Songs on Butterflies" (1828), "Fifty lyrical Ballads" (1829), "Long Long Ago" (1833), "Weeds of Witchery" (1837), "Kindness in Women, tales" fiction (1837), "Kate Leslie", David Dumps, Or, The Budget of Blunders" (1837), and many others. A section of the obituary notice for Thomas Haynes Bayly, Esq., in "The Gentleman's Magazine" reads; "Mr. Bayly, besides his many beautiful songs, was the author of, we believe, two or three novels, and thirty or forty pieces for the state. The Public went nightly to theatres to laugh at "Tom Noddy's Secret," to see "Perfection," or witness his other popular productions; ..."** . * "New Monthly Magazine, and Literary Journal", 1831, Part III., Historical Register, London Henry Colburn and Richard Bently, New Burlington-Street. Lewis" and the publisher's date and details, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate It also bears the plate's number "36" to the upper right corner of the margin above the image. This impression is in excellent condition throughout without a trace of staining, foxing or fading. Members included such prominent British artists as, Sir John Everett Millais, James McNeill Whistler, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Sir John Tenniel, Charles Samuel Keene, Joseph Clark, John Wright Oakes, Walter Severn, William Gale, Frederick Smallfield, Henry Clarence Whaite, Matthew James Lawless, Arthur James Lewis, Henry Stacy Marks, Charles Rossiter, Vincent Bury, Lord G. Fitzgerald, J. R. Clayton, John Sleigh, and Lord Gerald Fitzgerald. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and all of the above named artists contributed to their portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, first published by Day & Son Limited, Lithographers & Publishers, London, 1862. In total, that publication contained forty-seven original etchings. The Junior Club also issued, another important publication in 1858, Passages from the Poems of Thomas Hood published by E.
