It is printed on wove paper and with full margins as published a limited edition of one hundred impressions in April by the The Print Connoisseur, New York. This striking woodcut was originally commissioned by Albert E. McVitty as a Christmas card. It depicts a shepherd guarding his flock of sheep turning to the sky and seeing the light. It is a fine, original example of the art created by the American artist, Arthur Allen Lewis. "Allen Lewis has his own place in American art; his own niche. No one else is quite like Allen Lewis." * |
Title: | Christmas Card for Albert E. McVitty (Shepherd Guarding his Sheep) |
Artist: | Lewis, Arthur Allen (Mobile, Alabama, 1873 - New York City, 1957) |
Date: | 1927 |
Medium: | Original Color Woodcut |
Publisher: | The Print Connoisseur, New York |
Note: | Arthur Allen Lewis 'Allen Lewis': A distinguished early twentieth century painter, etcher, illustrator and (most particularly) woodcut artist, Allen Lewis studied art under George Bridgman in Buffalo before completing his studies in Paris, under Gerome. Lewis's art first came to national attention in 1904 when he was awarded the bronze medal at the St. Louis Exposition. During the following decades his reputation continued to grow through both his original woodcuts, wood engravings and in his illustrations for stories and poetry by Whitman and Balzac and in such well-known books as Journeys to Bagdad by Charles S. Brooks (1915), and Paul Bunyon by James Stevens (1925).. |
In his original woodcuts and wood engravings, Arthur Allen Lewis proved to be a leading master of both black and white and color printmaking techniques. Lewis's brilliant use of engraving techniques came to the attention of the eminent Joseph Pennell in 1924, and he appointed Lewis head professor of wood engraving and colour printmaking at the prestigious New York Art Students' League.
Arthur Allen Lewis was a full member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, the American Institute of Graphic Arts, the Print Maker's Society of California and the National Academy of Design. Examples of his original wood engravings are included in the collections of the Chicago Art Institute, the Metropolitan Museum, New York, and in the British Museum, London.
The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January, 1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue and the more expensive, limited editions of one hundred contained a hand signed print. During its decade of publishing such major artists as George Elbert Burr, John Taylor Arms, Frank Benson, George Wales, Paul Honore, Samuel Chamberlain, Birger Sandzen, Lynd Ward, J. W. Winkler, Preissig, Arthur Allen Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings, linocuts and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
The leading article for the April, 1927 issue was entitled, "The Art of Allen Lewis" . To accompany the article Lewis supplied the publisher with five original woodcuts. As well he was commissioned for an original etching (Tennessee Mountain Sisters) which served as the frontispiece. Each of these original prints (of which Christmas Card for Albert E. McVitty is one) was published by The Print Connoisseur in a limited edition of one hundred impressions. Obviously, this striking woodcut was originally commissioned by Albert E. McVitty as a Christmas card. It depicts a shepherd guarding his flock of sheep turning to the sky and seeing the light.
