Eugene Leroux's original lithograph, "L'Embuscade" (The Ambush) was printed in Paris for the art journal, "Les Beaux-Arts", Illustration, des Arts et de la Litterature in 1843. This impression bears the publisher’s blindstamp (“L. Curmer, 49 rue de Richelieu”) within the lower right margin. Leon Curmer (Paris, 1801-1870) was an important publisher of original graphic art and fine, illustrated books. He began his publishing house in 1833 and for the next three and a half decades produced some of the greatest illustrated books of the era. These include Paul et Virginie (1838), Les Francais peints par eux-memes (1842), L’Imitation de Jesus-Christ (1857), Le livre d’heures de la reine Anne de Bretagne (1861) and L’oeuvre de Jean Fouquet (1867). Leon Curmer became most famous for his complex application of chromolithography (colour lithography) to reproduce medieval illuminations and manuscripts. He was also one of the first publishers to introduce colour photography. In "L'Embuscade", Le Roux depicts a quiet evening scene in the marshes, with tall rushes and grass swinging in the breeze, and a solitary old tree still bursting with life that dominates the view. In the forefront, the artists depicts a group of armed men in an opening under the tree, one anxiously stands guard awaiting the ambush while the other four rest. This is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the French artist, Eugene Leroux, (also spelt, Eugene Le Roux). |

In this latter category Leroux was praised for his lithographic art after the works of Decamps and Karl Bodmer. A Along with Celestin Nanteuil, Adolphe Mouilleron, Francois-Louis Francais and Henri Baron, Eugene Leroux was a major contributor for "Les Artistes Contemporains" (1845-1855) and "Les Artistes Anciens et Modernes", which ran from (1850 to 1860), Leroux also contributed to the series and "Les Beaux-Arts". |

However, looking more closely, Le Roux brilliantly manages to change the mood with just one man, the one anxiously standing guard, looking out through the rushes awaiting ... "The Ambush!" This is a fine, original example of the 19th century French art created by Eugene Leroux, (also spelt, Eugene Le Roux). | |
