Note: |
Auguste-Louis Lepere 'Auguste Lepere': A French painter and etcher of the
first order, Auguste Lepere was also the undisputed leader in the creative
revival of wood engraving in Europe. At age thirteen, Auguste Lepere began his
artistic education in the Paris studio of the engraver, Smeeton. By the
mid 1870's, Lepere had clearly emerged as one of the most renowned printmakers
of his time. |
|
In both etching and wood engraving, Auguste-Louis Lepere became known
as the prime delineator of daily life. Yet he was also a tireless experimenter
with innovations such as combining etching and wood engraving on the same
print. As well, he was one of the first artists to experiment with coloured
papers and often had his own papers made. |
|
The last years of Lepere's life were given almost exclusively
to wood engraving. In total his graphic oeuvre consists of over 150 etchings,
over two hundred wood engravings and 14 lithographs. Auguste Lepere's brilliant art
is represented in most major international collections. |
|
During the first year of World War One, Auguste-Louis Lepere created a
small set of woodcuts in response to the horrors of global conflict. They
are quite unlike anything else he engraved during his life, and in their
intensity and feeling can only be allied to Goya's great series, 'The
Disasters of War'. It is most interesting to note that Lepere's emotionally
charged style in these works of art is very comparable to the beginnings
of German Expressionism, which had just begun to develop at this time.
Lepere, like his German contemporaries such as Otto Dix, was reacting
against man's savage brutalities. |
|
These woodcuts are very scarce. They were published in a
signed, limited edition of only thirty-five, by the great Paris printer
and publisher, Sagot. One should note the blindstamp of Sagot under Lepere's
signature. As well these valuable woodcuts were printed upon Lepere's
personal hand-made paper. Each bears the artist's snail watermark with
his 'A.L.' monogramme. |
