Jules Michelet: (Paris, 1798
- Hyeres, 1874), was born into a poor family and worked his way through
the College de Charlemagne and the University of Paris. He became a professor
of history at College Rollin (1821) and a lecturer at Ecole Normale (1827).
Michelet was then appointed chief of the historical section of the National
Archives (1831). In 1838 he assumed the post of professor at the College
de France. During the following decade Jules Michelet wrote such books as, "Etude
sur les jesuites" (1843) and "Le Peuple" (1846), which were both liberal and
anticlerical. |
|
In 1851, Jules Michelet was dismissed from the College de
France for refusing his allegiance to the Second Empire. He now devoted
himself fully to his magnum opus, the "Histoire de France", which
he began in 1833 and completed in 1867. This lengthy work proved to be the most
influential history of France written in the nineteenth century. |
