He began to exhibit his art at the prestigious Paris Salon in 1832 and continued to show there until 1855. This institution also awarded Augustin Lemaitre a medal for his work in 1834. A. F. Lemaitre was particularly well received for his genre depictions, figure studies & landscapes. |

By the midway mark of the century Augustin Francois Lemaitre had also established himself as an editor and publisher, often designing much of the art for his own books. Such is the case with this fine engraving entitled, "Canada: Indiens Chassant Le Bisont" (Indians Hunting Buffalo) which originates from a large project examining native peoples of the world. Canadian Aboriginal tribes were thoroughly dealt with and A. F. Lemaitre engraved twelve plates upon this subject. "Indiens Chassant Le Bisont" is the 8th plate in this series. These early portrayals are now very scarce and are much in demand for their historical and cultural importance. |
