Clare Leighton (Clare Veronica Hope Leighton) - Ex-Libris Harvey Simmonds (Caltha, Ranunculaceae): An original wood engraving, Ex Libris Harvey Simmonds was created by one of the greatest wood engravers of the twentieth century, Clare Leighton. Famous for her many illustrated books and accomplished engravings of rural life, Leighton probably had little time for designing and engraving bookplates and thus it is unlikely that she created more than a handful of ex-libris engravings. Ex Libris Harvey Simmonds portrays a buttercup or marsh marigold. An impression of this engraved bookplate is included in the Botanical Art Collection at the Hunt Institute under the title, ‘Caltha, Ranunculaceae’. This engraving is printed upon mulberry paper and with full margins as created by the artist in 1956. It represents a striking, original example of the botanical art created by the British / American artist, Clare Leighton. |

Note: | Clare Leighton 'Clare Veronica Hope Leighton': Born in London, Clare Leighton was the daughter of the authors, Robert Leighton and Marie Flora Barbara Connor. She began her arts education in 1918 at the Brighton School of Art, and then at the Slade School of Fine Arts, under Henry Tonks (1862-1937). In 1922 Leighton began her studies with Noel Rooke at the London Central School. Rooke (1881-1953) was a founding member of the Society of Wood Engravers (1920) and suggested to Clare Leighton that she try her hand in this medium. Her first wood engraving was praised by the great artist, Eric Gill (1882-1940), who encouraged Leighton to pursue a career as a wood engraver. By 1925 Clare Leighton was illustrating literary works with her original engravings, and shortly thereafter she illustrated such classics as Thomas Hardy’s The Return of the Native (1929), Thorton Wilder’s, The Bridge of San Luis Rey (1929) and Emily Bronte’s, Wuthering Heights (1931). |
In 1933 Clare Leighton both wrote and illustrated the great book, The Farmer’s Year: A Calendar of English Husbandry. There followed a number of other fine books which she both authored and engraved, such as Four Hedges (1935), Country Matters (1937) and Southern Harvest (1943). The last two books dealt with rural life in the United States, and during these years Clare Leighton was spending at least as much time in America as in Britain. She settled permanently in the United States in 1939 and became a citizen in 1945.
Settling first in North Carolina, Leighton was appointed as a visiting lecturer at Duke University. During this period she was the author and illustrator of Sometime Never (1939), Southern Harvest (1943), and Give Us this Day (1943). In 1952 Clare Leighton moved to Woodbury, Connecticut, on the advice of her good friend, the American etcher, John Taylor Arms (1887-1953).
Clare Leighton was a full member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers (Britain), the Society of Wood Engravers (Britain), the Institute of Arts and Letters (America) and the National Academy of Design (America). Her distinguished wood engravings are included in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Library of Congress, Washington, D. C., the Art Institute of Chicago, Los Angeles County Museum, the Fogg Art Museum, Boston, Harvard University, the National Gallery of Canada, the National Gallery of Sweden, and the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum, London. An impression of this engraved bookplate entitled, Ex-Libris Harvey Simmonds is included in the Botanical Art Collection at the Hunt Institute under the title, ‘Caltha, Ranunculaceae’.
A Note on Ex Libris Art: Ex-Libris woodcuts, wood engravings and etchings have their beginnings as far back as the mid fifteenth century. Their function was initially quite utilitarian as plates used to signify the ownership of books. As private libraries and their owners gained more wealth and prestige, however, so did their ex-libris bookplates. Pictorial imagery became as important as the wording and the finished work of art often came to stand as an owner’s claim to fame. Before long famous artists were commissioned by wealthy collectors to create their ex libris designs and during the centuries such great talents as Durer, Holbein, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Rockwell Kent all contributed significantly to this great genre.
The golden era for ex-libris art was during the twentieth century, most particularly in the Art Deco decade of the 1930’s and 1940’s. Collecting of ex-libris etchings, engravings and wood engravings reached such a height at this time that many artists devoted themselves almost exclusively to this area.
Ex Libris Harvey Simmonds portrays a buttercup or marsh marigold. An impression of this engraved bookplate is included in the Botanical Art Collection at the Hunt Institute under the title, ‘Caltha, Ranunculaceae’. The 'Caltha' is a genus in the 'Buttercup' family (Ranunculaceae). The 'Caltha Palustris' is one of ten species assigned to this genus; a perennial that is most commonly known as 'Marsh-Marigold', and 'Kingcup', but is also called 'Meadow Buttercup', 'Cowslip', 'Bullflower', 'Crowfoot', and other names in different geographical regions. The yellow marsh-marigold prefers full to partial sun with wet and marshy soil. Its flowering season begins during mid-spring, and depending on the weather conditions and soil can last until mid- June. This showy spring plant resembles large buttercups rather than marigolds.
