Note: | Alphonse Legros: A very influential painter, etcher and lithographer on both sides of the English Channel, Alphonse Legros moved from Paris to London permanently in 1863 on the advice of his friend, Whistler. A master of figure subjects, portraits and landscapes, Legros assumed the head professorship of etching and engraving at the Royal College in South Kensington in 1875. Alphonse Legros later became the professor of art at the Slade School of Art, London. From this position he fashioned a standard and influenced many younger British artists, most notably William Strang, Charles Furse and Charles Holroyd. In total Legros's graphic oeuvre runs to 704 etchings and around fifty lithographs. |
Most of Alphonse Legros's figure subjects were inspired by the artist's early impressions of French peasant life. Influences upon his art in this area have been traced to the paintings and drawings of Gustave Courbet and the art of Goya and the Spanish School. Relatedly, the themes of poverty and mortality figure prominently in the etchings and lithographs of Alphonse Legros. One may point to Holbein and other Northern masters of the Renaissance in this vein, but Alphonse Legros's treatment of this theme is all his own. His masterworks, however, are held to be in the field of portraiture and his etched portraits of Cardinal Manning, G. F. Watts, Victor Hugo and others are now seen as among the finest of late nineteenth century art.
Self Portrait is an original lithograph by Alphonse Legros. It is one of several original lithographs created for a portfolio published by T. Fisher Unwin entitled, Lithography & Lithographers:Some chapters in the history of the art, by Elizabeth Robins Pennell; together with desriptions and technical explanations of modern artistic methods by Joseph Pennell, published in 1898. In this work, Pennell examined the artistic advancements of lithography, with particular emphasis on his contemporaries. With this in mind he commissioned original lithographs from seven artists, including James McNeil Whistler, Alphonse Legros, William Strang, C. H. Shannon and Alexandre Lunois. All these commissioned works of art were printed by London's master lithographic printer, Thomas R, Way. Thomas Way (1837-1915) and his son, Thomas Robert Way (1861-1913), were one of the leading London lithographic printers at this time.
