Note:	Alphonse Legros: A very influential etcher on both sides of the English Channel, Alphonse Legros moved to England permanently in 1863 on the advice of his friend, Whistler. A master etcher of figure subjects, portraits and landscapes, Alphonse Legros assumed the head professorship of etching and engraving at the Royal College in South Kensington in 1875. He later became the professor of art at the Slade School of Art, London. From this position he fashioned a standard and influenced many younger British artists, most notably William Strang, Charles Furse and Charles Holroyd. In total Legros's graphic oeuvre runs to 704 etchings.
	Most of Alphonse Legros's figure subjects were inspired by the artist's early impressions of French peasant life. Influences upon his art in this area have been traced to the paintings and drawings of Gustave Courbet and the art of Goya and the Spanish School. Relatedly, the themes of poverty and death figure prominently in the etchings of Legros. One may point to Holbein and other Northern masters of the Renaissance in this vein, but Alphonse Legros's treatment of this theme is all his own.
	"Charity" was published by London, J.S. Virtue & Co. Limited for The Art Journal in 1881. "The Art Journal" was an important late nineteenth and early twentieth century annual dedicated to the visual arts. Such leading artists as Axel Haig, J. M. W. Whistler, Seymour Haden, Herbert Von Herkomer, Alfred Brunet-Debaines, John MacWhirter, Miles Birket Foster, Sir Charles Holroyd, Alphonse Legros and others contributed original etched.plates to The Art Journal, London over several decades.
	Here, Legros depicts an old man with crutches by his side (a poor beggar), sitting on the steps to the entrance of a large building. He is holding out his hat hoping for a donation from either the young woman or the older woman accompnaying her. Both the National Art GAllery, Washington DC (Accession number: 1952.10.60) and The British Museum, London (Museum number 1931,0214.21) include an impression of Charity in their collections.
