The Queen of the Harem

Robert Leblond's & Abraham Leblond's "The Queen of the Harem" is an original oil print (Baxtertype) printed upon mid nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published by LeBlond & Co., London around 1855. This Le Blond print depicts an interior scene where a young woman with long dark hair is sitting on a red shroud placed on the marble bath situated by an open window. As she prepares for her bath, she places her right foot into the water to test it. The view from the window reveals an Oriental building or palace in the distance. "The Queen of the Harem" was also published in a smaller format as a miniature 'Needle Box' print for the "Fancy Subject Set". This Baxtertype is a beautiful example of this demanding form of art created by the 19th century British artists Robert & Abraham Leblond.

Note:	George Baxter: During the 1840's and 1850's the famous English artist, publisher and printer, George Baxter, created a complex method of printing images in colours with oils by means of combining wood blocks and metal plates. The complex technique met with great success and thus some of the earliest and most accomplished Victorian era colour prints bear the names of George Baxter and of his immediate followers.
	Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond: The best known followers of Baxter are Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond. In 1840, the LeBlond Brothers established the engraving and printing firm of 'LeBlond & Company' in Walbrook, London. In 1849, Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond had become Baxter's principal licensees (Baxter had taken out patents on his invention and charged a fee to those who used it). However, by the mid 1850's, Abraham and Robert Leblond had become Baxter's chief rivals. The LeBlond Brothers proved to be particularly skillful at pirating Baxter's images and thus cashed in on an already developed market. Yet most of their prints (most notably their views) were original creations, and it is with very fine works of original art such as this example entitled, "The Queen of the Harem" that their fame now rests. Both LeBlond brothers designed and engraved the plates until 1863 when Robert Died.
	It can't be doubted that Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond were highly skilled in the art of oil printing. This exceptionally coloured LeBlond oil print confirms that, next to Baxter himself, they were the most accomplished practitioners of this demanding form of art. This scene depicts an interior setting where a young woman with long dark hair is sitting on a red shroud placed on the marble bath situated by an open window. As she prepares for her bath, she places her right foot into the water to test it. The view from the window reveals an Oriental building or palace in the distance. "The Queen of the Harem" was also published in a smaller format as a miniature 'Needle Box' print for the "Fancy Subject Set". This impression hails from the larger version.

Condition:	Printed on nineteenth century wove paper with full margins as published by LeBlond & Co., London around 1855. It is a brilliantly printed impression and in excellent condition throughout without a trace of discolouration or staining. "The Queen of the Harem" is a beautiful and valuable example of the mid nineteenth century oil print.
