Robert Leblond & Abraham Leblond (LeBlond & Co., London)

Robert Leblond and Abraham Leblond LeBlond and Co. London - The Lyre

The Lyre

Robert Leblond's & Abraham Leblond's original oil print entitled, "The Lyre" is printed upon mid nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published by LeBlond & Co., London around 1855. The firm was established in 1840 by the Le Blond brothers. This scene depicts a full portrait of a young woman with long brown hair. She is kneeling on her right knee playing a 'Lyre' by a brook or or stream in a lush forest. She is clad in a white garment, and a crimson wrap draped from her waist down, bathing in the sunlight, most likely after her bath. The device the woman is playing is called a 'lyre', most often represented as a musical instrument played by the ancient Greeks. Although there are distinctive differences in its appearance, it is often described as a small harp. The Lyre has two turtle shell or wooden upright arms, almost in the shape of an 'S' which join at the bottom forming a 'U' shaped frame, and a crossbar or yoke near the top with four and sometimes more strings in the center which are strummed to create music. "The Lyre" is a beautiful example of the mid 19th century (Baxtertype) print and the art of the Le Blond brothers.

Title: The Lyre
Artist: LeBlond, Robert (London, 1816 - 1863)
Artist: LeBlond, Abraham (London, 1819 - 1894)
Date: c. 1855
Medium: Original Oil Print (Baxtertype)
Publisher: LeBlond & Co., London
Printer: LeBlond & Co., London
Note: George Baxter: During the 1840's and 1850's the famous English artist, publisher and printer, George Baxter, created a complex method of printing images in colours with oils by means of combining wood blocks and metal plates. The complex technique met with great success and thus some of the earliest and most accomplished Victorian era colour prints bear the names of George Baxter and of his immediate followers.
Note: Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond: The best known followers of Baxter are Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond. In 1840 they established the engraving and printing firm of 'LeBlond & Company' in Walbrook, London. In 1849, the Le Blond Brothers had become Baxter's principal licensees (Baxter had taken out patents on his invention and charged a fee to those who used it). However, by the mid 1850's the brothers had become Baxter's chief rivals. Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond proved to be particularly skillful at pirating Baxter's images and thus cashed in on an already developed market. Yet most of their prints (most notably their views) were original creations, and it is with very fine works of original art such as this example entitled, "The Lyre" that their fame now rests. Both LeBlond brothers designed and engraved the plates until 1863 when Robert Died.
It can't be doubted that Abraham and Robert Leblond were highly skilled in the art of oil printing. This exceptionally coloured LeBlond oil print confirms that, next to Baxter himself, they were the most accomplished practitioners of this demanding form of art. This scene in this original Baxtertype oil print by the Le Blond brothers depicts a full portrait of a young woman with long brown hair. She is kneeling on her right knee as she plays a 'Lyre' by a brook or stream in a lush forest. The yo ung woman is clad in a white garment, and a crimson wrap draped from her waist down, bathing in the sunlight, most likely after her bath. The device the woman is playing is called a 'lyre', most often represented as a musical instrument played by the ancient Greeks. Although there are distinctive differences in its appearance, some describe it as a small harp. It has two turtle shell or wooden upright arms, almost in the shape of an 'S' which join at the bottom forming a 'U' shaped frame, and a crossbar or yoke near the top with four and sometimes more strings in the center. Unlike its relatives, the bow instruments known as the Cretan lyra, and the Byzantine lyra which are more like a violin, the lyre is most often played by strumming the strings and does not use a bow. Bernard Picart original etching entitled, "Amphion Builds the Walls of Thebes by the Music of his Lyre" shows a fine example of the lyra. The lyre belongs to the zither instrument family which includes such beautiful chord instruments as the harp, the kantele, the kithara, the chelys, the guitar, the harpsichord, the piano and other similar chording instruments. Other works of art representing the 'lyre' include, "Sibyl (Sibyl the Prophetess or Parnassus and the Goddess of Poetry)" by F. C. Lewis, and "Portion of a Shield in Silver by Vechte, for Hunt and Roskell of London" by John Alfred Vinter. This is a fine, original example of the art published by Le Blond & Co., London.
