Robert Leblond's & Abraham Leblond's landscape view of "The Fisherman's Hut" (From the Oval Set) is an original oil print (Baxtertype) printed upon mid nineteenth century wove paper on its full stamped mount as published by LeBlond & Co., London in 1859. The most sought after of all LeBlond’s prints are referred to simply as the ‘Ovals’, and "The Fisherman’s Hut" is one of the finest within this category. This scene depicts the fisherman's hut, boats and family by the seashore. It is a beautiful, original, example of the art of the Victorian oil print created by the British artists, Robert and Abraham Le Blond. |

Note: | George Baxter: During the 1840's and 1850's the famous English artist, publisher and printer, George Baxter, created a complex method of printing images in colours with oils by means of combining wood blocks and metal plates. The complex technique met with great success and thus some of the earliest and most accomplished Victorian era colour prints bear the names of George Baxter and of his immediate followers. |
Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond: The best known followers of Baxter are the LeBlond Brothers. In 1840, Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond established the engraving and printing firm of 'LeBlond & Company' in Walbrook, London. In 1849 they had become Baxter's principal licensees (Baxter had taken out patents on his invention and charged a fee to those who used it). However, by the mid 1850's the brothers had become Baxter's chief rivals. Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond proved to be particularly skillful at pirating Baxter's images and thus cashed in on an already developed market. Yet most of their prints (most notably their views) were original creations, and it is with very fine works of original art such as this example that their fame now rests.
It should be noted that Abraham Le Blond is best known for his set of thirty two oval prints which are considered to be of superior artistry. Therefore, it is not surprising that some of the most sought after of all LeBlond’s prints are the oval prints, referred to simply as the ‘Ovals’, and "The Fisherman’s Hut" is one of the finest within this category. The 'Oval Set' includes, such works as, "Blowing Bubbles", "Crossing the Brook", "Grandfather's Pipe", "Grandmother's Snuff Box", "May Day", "The Blackberry Gatherers", "The Burning Glass", "The Fisherman's Hut","The Pedler", "The Pet Rabbits", The Mill Stream Towing the Prize", "The Sailor's Departure", "The Soldiers Return", "The Swing", "The Young Angler", and other striking examples, all of which where printed and published in the same format and size. Like the oil prints of Baxter, the LeBlond Brothers 'Oval' prints easily increase in value when found on their original full stamped and untrimmed mounts. This particular impression is printed on its full stamped mount as published by Le Blond & Co., London and is in near excellent condition. This evening coastal scene depicts fishing vessels stranded on the beach after the tide has gone out. In the foreground, we can see, three children emptying a large basket which contains the day's catch as their mother watches over them. The dog beside her is gazing at the basket cradled around her left arm, and the fisherman is sitting in front of his hut with a flask by his feet, mending the net in preparation for the next days task. It can't be doubted that Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond were highly skilled in the art of oil printing. This exceptionally coloured LeBlond oil print confirms that, next to Baxter himself, they were the most accomplished practitioners of this demanding form of art. Both LeBlond brothers designed and engraved the plates until 1863 when Robert Died.

Condition: | Printed upon mid nineteenth century wove paper on its full stamped mount as published in London by LeBlond & Co. in 1859. Slight staining in the outer margins of the mount, else a brilliant impression and in very fine condition throughout. To find an original oil print in such pristine condition is very rare, let alone such a famous example as The Fisherman's Hut. This is a most valuable, original example of the art of the Victorian oil print and the LeBlond brothers. |
