Robert Leblond's and Abraham Leblond's original oil print entitled, "The Crystal Palace and Gardens, Sydenham" is printed upon mid nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published in London by LeBlond & Co., before 1855. The famous Crystal Palace opened to the public in 1854. During this year, both Baxter and the Leblond brothers published exterior and interior views of the building. This landscape depicts a miniature architectural view of the Crystal Palace buildings surrounded by splendid gardens. This is a fine, original example of the miniature Baxtertype prints created by the British firm of Le Blond & Co., & the Le Blond Brothers. |

Note: | During the 1840's and 1850's the famous English artist, publisher and printer, George Baxter, created a complex method of printing images in colours with oils by means of combining wood blocks and metal plates. The complex technique met with great success and thus some of the earliest and most accomplished Victorian era colour prints bear the names of George Baxter and of his immediate followers. |
The best known followers of Baxter are the LeBlond Brothers. In 1840 they established the engraving and printing firm of 'LeBlond & Company' in Walbrook, London. In 1849, Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond had become Baxter's principal licensees (Baxter had taken out patents on his invention and charged a fee to those who used it). However, by the mid 1850's, Abraham and Robert Leblond had become Baxter's chief rivals. The LeBlond Brothers proved to be particularly skillful at pirating Baxter's images and thus cashed in on an already developed market. Yet most of their prints (most notably their views) were original creations, and it is with very fine works of original art such as this example that their fame now rests.
Designed by Joseph Paxton, the famous Crystal Palace, one of the greatest glass and iron structures was originally built for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Two years later, it was relocated to Sydenham Hill and once again opened its doors to the public in 1854, with an opening ceremony preformed by Queen Victoria. During this year both Baxter and Robert and Abraham Leblond published exterior and interior views of the building. Unfortunately, the Crystal Palace was destroyed by fire in 1936. This LeBlond miniature architectural view depicts the entire Crystal Palace building surrounded by its splendid gardens, as well as a military parade of its onlookers in the foreground. With all its striking details, it is clearly one of LeBlond's finest miniature oil prints.
It can't be doubted that Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond were highly skilled in the art of oil printing. This exceptionally coloured LeBlond oil print confirms that, next to Baxter himself, they were the most accomplished practitioners of this demanding form of art.
