Robert Leblond's & Abraham Leblond's original oil print (Baxtertype) entitled, "The Bridesmaid" is printed upon mid nineteenth century wove paper as published by LeBlond & Co., London c. 1855. This firm was established in 1840 by Robert Leblond & Abraham Leblond. This exceptionally coloured LeBlond oil print confirms that, next to Baxter himself, they were the most accomplished practitioners of this demanding form of art. This image depicts a portrait of a young woman with shoulder length brown curled hair. She is wearing a pale crimson brocade or embroidered dress and a long velvety yellow cloak around her shoulders. She is holding a bouquet of pink, white and blue flowers in her light hand, and as she walks out the open door way, she turns her head towards her left to look at the viewer before departing. Her head is turned towards the viewer. Baxter’s print entitled, "The Bridesmaid" was printed and published in 1855. This version was created by the Le Blond brothers several years later. There are only minute differences in the printing of the two images and many have thus mistaken this version of "The Bridesmaid" as the work of George Baxter. |

Note: | George Baxter: During the 1840's and 1850's the famous English artist, publisher and printer, George Baxter, created a complex method of printing images in colours with oils by means of combining wood blocks and metal plates. The complex technique met with great success and thus some of the earliest and most accomplished Victorian era colour prints bear the names of George Baxter and of his immediate followers. |
Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond: The best known followers of Baxter are the LeBlond Brothers. In 1840 they established the engraving and printing firm of 'LeBlond & Company' in Walbrook, London. In 1849, Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond had become Baxter's principal licensees (Baxter had taken out patents on his invention and charged a fee to those who used it). However, by the mid 1850's the brothers had become Baxter's chief rivals. Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond proved to be particularly skillful at pirating Baxter's images and thus cashed in on an already developed market. Yet most of their prints (most notably their views) were original creations, and it is with very fine works of original art such as this example that their fame now rests. Both LeBlond brothers designed and engraved the plates until 1863 when Robert Died.
It can't be doubted Abraham and Robert Leblond were highly skilled in the art of oil printing. This exceptionally coloured LeBlond oil print confirms that, next to Baxter himself, they were the most accomplished practitioners of this demanding form of art. Baxter’s "The Bridesmaid" was printed and published in 1855. The Le Blond version was created several years later. There are only minute differences in the printing of the images and many have thus mistaken this version of "The Bridesmaid" as the work of George Baxter. This original oil print depicts a portrait of a young woman with shoulder length brown curled hair. It is a fine, original example of the art created by LeBlond & Co.
