Robert Leblond & Abraham Leblond (LeBlond & Co., London)

Robert Leblond and Abraham Leblond LeBlond and Co. London - Osborne House Isle of Wight

Osborne-House, Isle of Wight

Robert Leblond's & Abraham Leblond's needle-box view of Osborne-House, Isle of Wight is an original oil print (Baxtertype) printed upon mid nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published by LeBlond & Co., London, around 1855. The firm was established in 1840 by Robert Leblond & Abraham Leblond. "Osborne-House, Isle of Wight" depicts an exterior miniature view of the castle surrounded by its splendid landscape. It is a beautiful example of the mid nineteenth century British miniature oil print also known as a (Baxtertype). The palace was built as a summer home for Queen Victoria where she (the Queen), Prince Albert and their nine children spent extended periods of time each year. Osborne-House was designed by Prince Albert along with the architect and builder, Thomas Cubitt. Designed in the style of an Italian Renaissance pallazzo, Osborne-House is famous for its two square belvedere towers at each end of the structure, its majestic interiors and grounds and of course, as one of Queen Victoria's favourite homes. This Needle box print is a fine, original example of the miniature oil prints published by the British firm, Le Blond & Co., London.

Note: George Baxter: During the 1840's and 1850's the famous English artist, publisher and printer, George Baxter, created a complex method of printing images in colours with oils by means of combining wood blocks and metal plates. The complex technique met with great success and thus some of the earliest and most accomplished Victorian era colour prints bear the names of George Baxter and of his immediate followers.
Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond: The best known followers of Baxter are Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond. In 1840 they established the engraving and printing firm of 'LeBlond & Company' in Walbrook, London. In 1849 they had become Baxter's principal licensees (Baxter had taken out patents on his invention and charged a fee to those who used it). However, by the mid 1850's, Abraham Leblond and Robert Leblond had become Baxter's chief rivals. The LeBlond Brothers proved to be particularly skillful at pirating Baxter's images and thus cashed in on an already developed market. Yet most of their prints (most notably their views) were original creations, and it is with very fine works of original art such as this example that their fame now rests.
It can't be doubted that Abraham and Robert Leblond were highly skilled in the art of oil printing. This exceptionally coloured LeBlond oil print confirms that, next to Baxter himself, they were the most accomplished practitioners of this demanding form of art.
Both LeBlond brothers designed and engraved the plates until 1863 when Robert Died.
The smallest prints created by both Baxter and LeBlond were designed as sets of up to twelve images which would then be cut into individual prints and mounted onto the tops of needle-boxes. In 1850, Baxter produced his 'Regal Set' which included ten miniature prints, "Osborne-House, Isle of Wight", "Her Majesty at Balmoral Castle", "Brothers Water From Kirkstone Foot, Westmoreland", "Her Majesty Leaving Portsmouth Harbour", "Her Majesty opening Parliament", "The Great Exhibition, The Crystal Palace", "Venice", "Prince Albert in St. James Park", "Queen Victoria at Windsor", and "Her Majesty at Balmoral", the 'Fancy Set', included ten prints, a portraits of Queen Victoria, a portrait of Prince Albert, six individual portraits of women, and two landscapes, the 'Queen and the Heroes of India, 1857', a set of ten oval portraits, the 'Greek Dance' and the 'Harem', 1850', set of two prints, and others. LeBlond's equally well printed needle-box views and portraits were published several years thereafter. This original miniature Needle Box Print entitled, "Osborne-House, Isle of Wight" hails fro the 'Regal Set'.
This original LeBlond needlepoint oil print depicts an exterior view of Osborne-House located in the Isle of Wight. The palace was built as a summer home for Queen Victoria between 1845 and 1851. The Queen, Prince Albert and their nine children lived at the royal residence for extended periods of time each year. This Royal seaside palace was Queen Victoria’s favorite home. She died there in 1901. Osborne-House was designed by Prince Albert along with the architect and builder Thomas Cubitt, whose company build the main facade of Buckingham Palace. Designed in the style of an Italian Renaissance pallazzo, Osborne-House is famous for its two square belvedere towers at each end of the structure, its majestic interiors and grounds and of course, Queen Victoria.
