Lebadang: A major international painter and printmaker,
Lebadang left Vietnam in 1939 to study at the Ecole des Beaux Artes in
Toulouse, France. His first one man exhibition took place in Paris in
1950. From this date Lebadang's paintings and prints became famous for
their uniquely personal blend of eastern and western elements as well
as their distinct textural qualities and masterful colour modulations.
During the following decades Lebadang's poetic imagery has been the subject
of over fifty one man shows held around the world. |
|
Lebadang's art first gained recognition in the United States
in 1966 when an exhibition of his paintings was launched at the Cincinnati
Art Museum. (Sunlight in the Jungle may have been included in this
important exhibition as on its verso it bears the Paris 1966 custom's
export stamp.) Further solo exhibitions took place in Paris, Nantes, Dusseldorf,
Cologne and Cannes. Today Lebadang's original art is included in many
important public and private collections such as the Rockefeller Collection,
New York, the Columbia Art Institute, the Phoenix Art Museum, the Cincinnati
Museum, the Loo Collection, Tokyo, the Foundation Museum, Kenya, Lund
University Museum, Sweden and the Museum of Arts and Letters, Paris. |
Provenance: |
This original Lebadang watercolor hails from the collection of Roger Trlak and bears his inventory
number, T-109, on the verso. Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the commercial
art company of Martin-Trlak in Chicago. In 1972 he also opened the RST
Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona where he exhibited not only his own large
collection of mostly contemporary art but also held important exhibitions
of many modern artists. These Included such major American and international
printmakers as Joseph Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni and Paul Wunderlich. Among
Trlak's closest friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan
Albright and Hans Burkhardt. Their original prints and paintings were
constantly exhibited at the RST Gallery until it was closed in 1975 due
to Trlak's untimely death. |
