Title: Noel
Artist: Leandre, Charles (Champesecret, Orne, 1862 - Paris, 1930)
Date: 1897
Medium: Original Color Lithograph
Publisher: L'Estampe Moderne, Paris
Note: Charles Leandre: One of the finest satirical artists of his time, Charles Leandre was leading exponent of the 'portrait-charge', that is a depiction of subjects with a combination of such artistry and panache which is reminiscent of the great art of Daumier. A true caricaturist, Leandre sketched those around him from the years of his early childhood. At the age of sixteen he entered the Montmartre studio of a leading historical painter and several years later completed his studies at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts.
It wasn't long before Charles Leandre's satirical drawings began to appear in the pages of France's leading journals such as, "Le Rire", "La Chat Noir", "Le Grand Guignol" and others. In fact, his portrayals of the British and of Queen Victoria, in particular, were so critical during the Boer War that they provoked official diplomatic protests from the other side of the English Channel.
Unlike some of his satirical contemporaries, Charles Leandre was a supremely gifted draughtsman, excelling as well in the fields of sculpture and lithographic art. "Noel" is a superb example of his artistry in this latter medium. The scene depicts church-goers on Christmas Eve. Young and old, rich and poor, Christmas is the one occasion where all humanity is on an equal footing.
