Valentin Le Campion's original wood engraving, Ex Libris Elizabeth Watson Diamond (Collecting of Exlibris Books) is one of several outstanding works of art he created for J. (Jack) Edouard Diamond and Elizabeth Watson Diamond. This particular wood engraving exists in both black and red printings. The paper in this impression is hand-made with a red, thread-like material embedded within it. As the Diamonds owned several private presses they must have had access to many varieties of hand-made papers. This original wood engraving was created by the Russian / French printmaker and Ex-Libris bookplate artist, Valentin Le Campion around 1935. The scene depicts five young women lifting a banner over the Globe they are holding up. The text on the banner around the globe reads; "Collecting of Exlibris Bookplates", & it also contains the name of one of the founders and owners of both the Hyacinth Press and the Diapure Press in Cleveland, Ohio, Elizabeth Watson Diamond. This impression is signed by the artist with his VLC monogramme in the block. |

Note: | Valentin Le Campion: A fine Art Deco era engraver and illustrator, Valentin Le Campion studied art techniques in his native Russia, under Favorsky and Alexis Kravtchenko. He moved to France around 1927 and settled permanently in the Paris suburb of Plessis-Robinson in 1933. Despite his short life Le Campion was commissioned to engrave many ex libris bookplates as well as illustrating a number of books including such classics as Swift's Gulliver in Lilliput, Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and Pushkin's The Captain's Daughter. His ex libris engravings, in particular, epitomize the both beautiful and powerful design elements of the Art Deco era such as this original wood engraving entitled, "Ex Libris Elizabeth Watson Diamond" created by the Russian / French printmaker and Ex-Libris bookplate artist, Valentin Le Campion. Printed in red ink, the scene depicts five young women lifting a banner over a Globe that delineates the North Pole, Canada, North America, Mexico, Central America and a good part of South America. The text on the banner reads; "Collecting of Exlibris Bookplates", & the name of the owner, Elizabeth Watson Diamond is printed under the image. |
Valentin Le Campion engraved at least four ex libris designs for the Diamond family, such as this original wood engraving created for Elizabeth Watson Diamond. J. (Jack) Edouard Diamond and Elizabeth Watson Diamond were the founders and owners of both the Hyacinth Press and the Diapure Press in Cleveland, Ohio. They commissioned such leading artists as Kalman Kubinyi, Rockwell Kent, John William Jameson, Paul Landacre, Valentin Le Campion (France), Vitezslav Fleissig (Czechoslovakia), Enrico Vannuccini (Italy), Adrian Feint (Australia), John Austin (England), This Mauve (Holland) and Leslie Victor Smith (Canada) to create some of the most striking ex libris plates of the 1930's and 1940's for their personal collection. The Irene D. Pace Collection of the Diamond Family Bookplates is housed in the permanent collection of the Robert B. Haas Family Arts Library, Yale University.
A Note on Ex Libris Art: Ex-Libris woodcuts, wood engravings and etchings have their beginnings as far back as the mid fifteenth century. Their function was initially quite utilitarian as plates used to signify the ownership of books. As private libraries and their owners gained more wealth and prestige, however, so did their ex-libris bookplates. Pictorial imagery became as important as the wording and the finished work of art often came to stand as an owner’s claim to fame. Before long famous artists were commissioned by wealthy collectors to create their ex libris designs and during the centuries such great talents as Durer, Holbein, Manet, Toulouse-Lautrec and Rockwell Kent all contributed significantly to this great genre.
The golden era for ex-libris art was during the twentieth century, most particularly in the Art Deco decade of the 1930’s. Collecting of ex-libris etchings, engravings and wood engravings reached such a height at this time that many artists devoted themselves almost exclusively to this area.
