Matthew James Lawless's original etching and aquatint, The Little Shipwrights, is one of four of his works of art that was commissioned by the Junior Etching Club for the 1862 portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets. The artist's other etched contributions are Sisters of Mercy, The Drummer and The Bivouac. This original etching & aquatint served as an illustration for George Crabbe's (1754-1832) poem, The Little Shipwright. The final lines of the poem are quoted below; "Her owner rigged her, and he knows her worth, The Little Shipwrights is printed upon wove paper and with full margins and is signed and dated "M. J. Lawless 1859" within the image. It also bears the artist's name "M. J. Lawless", publisher's name and date, "London, Published December 1st, 1861 by Day & Sons, Lith. to the Queen" along the lower margin of the plate as published in Passages from Modern English Poets in 1862. Note: | Matthew James Lawless: Despite a tragically short life (he died of consumption at the age of twenty-seven), Matthew James Lawless is rightly considered a high ranking, Pre-Raphaelite illustrator, etcher and painter. Of Irish birth, M. J. Lawless was educated at the Prior Park School, Bath, and at Langham, Cary's and Leigh's Art School in London. In London he was also a student of Henry O'Neill, RA. |
In his brief career Lawless was best known for his illustrations to such 1860's journals as Good Words, Once a Week, Churchman's Family Magazine and London Society. He also contributed drawings to such illustrated books as Lyra Germanica, Pictures of Society, Touches of Nature and Thornbury's Legendary Ballads. It was in his illustrative work that M. J. Lawless was often compared to another great Pre-Raphaelite artist, Sir John Everett Millais. Lawless also exhibited his paintings at the Royal Academy, from 1859 until the year of his death.
Matthew James Lawless was a full member of the Junior Etching Club (1857-1864), an institution that greatly contributed to the revival of Etching in England. Other members included the British artists, Sir John Everett Millais, Sir Francis Powell, Henry Moore, Charles Keene, John Wright Oakes, Walter Severn, William Gale, Frederick Smallfield, Henry Clarence Whaite and James McNeill Whistler. The Junior Etching Club often published their members’ etchings and all of the above named artists contributed to their most important portfolio, Passages from Modern English Poets, printed and published during the years 1861 and 1862.
As earlier noted, M. J. Lawless contributed four original etchings to Passages from Modern English Poets. Of all the members of the Junior Etching Club, Mathew Lawless was the only artist to experiment with the combined effects of aquatint with etching.
This original etching & aquatint served as an illustration for George Crabbe's (1754-1832) poem, The Little Shipwright. The final lines of the poem are quoted below; "Her owner rigged her, and he knows her worth, |
