Artist: | Lander, Benjamin (New York City, 1844 - ?) |
Date: | 1882 - 1883 |

Note: | Benjamin Lander: An early nineteenth century American etcher, Benjamin Lander first appears as a founding member of the short lived Brooklyn etching association known as The Scratchers' Club. Other members included Walter Aikman, Carleton Wiggins and Stanley Middleton. The unofficial president was George Wistar Hodge Ritchie who printed most of the member plates. Such is the case with "Partegat Pond", which bears Ritchie's address along the lower margin. The University of Iowa Libraries includes an impression of "Partegat Pond" in its permanent collection. |
Benjamin Lander was as well a member of the Brooklyn Art Association and exhibited his etchings and paintings there and at both the Boston Art Club and at the National Academy of Design. Further afield, Benjamin Lander participated in the Exposition Internationale de la gravure, Vienna (1883 & 1886) and at the Pan-Pacific Exposition, San Francisco (1915).
"Partegat Pond" was first exhibited in Boston in 1883. Here the Art Department of the New England Manufacturers' and Mechanics' Institute held a major exhibition of contemporary American art. Concentrating largely upon American drawings and etchings the exhibition catalogue listed 731 works of original art. Benjamin Lander's landscape, "Partegat Pond", listed in the catalogue under #400, was one of three original etchings he contributed to the exhibition. Most etchings from this exhibition were printed in small numbers and are today very scarce.
