Note: | Paul Landacre is today recognized as one of the finest engravers of the 1930's and 1940's. His bold and experimental designs, which often combined elements of abstractionism and art deco style, were admired internationally. In 1948 Britain's distinguished wood engraver, Claire Leighton wrote, "Paul Landacre is outstandingly successful in his feeling for light. And to get that light he always leaves a full deep balance and grades his whites with his black by cross-hatched and fine white lines. He is an artist who knows that he can get what he wants from the woodblock." * |
The Colophon is well known to collectors of both original printmaking and the book arts. During the 1930's and 1940's it published quarterly issues pertaining to these subjects. Some issues contained an original wood engraving, lithograph, linocut or etching commissioned by the publishers. Such well known printmakers of the time as Stow Wengenroth, Paul Landacre, Emile Ganso, Thomas Nason and David Milne contributed original works of graphic art. The Colophon published its prints in editions ranging from 1,750 to 2,500. As one can see by this original Paul Landacre lithograph entitled Campers, its printing techniques were superb. | |
