Adolphe Lalauze: A French 19th century etcher
and illustrator, Adolphe Lalauze first gained employment as a recording
controller and then studied art in Paris under Gaucherel. Early in his
career he concentrated mostly upon original etching, with many of his works
in this medium initially commissioned by Cadart in Paris. Such is probably
the case with Lavandieres, Antibes (Washerwomen, Antibes). Figure
and genre scenes, particularly those depicting women and children, were
Adolphe Lalauze's speciality. |
|
Beginning around 1880, Adolphe Lalauze also gained recognition
as a fine illustrative artist. In this area he illustrated such works as Paul
et Virginie, Physiologie de gout, La Diable amoureux, Don
Quichotte, The Vicar of Wakefield, Manon Lescaut and Gulliver's
Travels. |
|
Adolphe Lalauze first exhibited his art at the Paris Salon in 1872. He
received medals from the Exposition Universale in 1876, 1878 and 1889,
and was awarded the Chevalier de la Legion d'honneur from the French government.
He was also the father of the painter, Alphonse Lalauze, and the etching
teacher of Felix Buhot. |
|
Alphonse Lalauze's etching, Lavandieres, Antibes (Washerwomen, Antibes) is based upon a painting created in 1869 by the French artist Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier. It was published by Galerie Georges Petit, Paris, for "Exposition Meissonier" in 1893 . The catalolgue included anumber of original etchings after Meissonier by such artists as Abot, Allassoniere, Boulard, Champollion, Country, Faivre, Focillon, Kratke, Alphonse Lalause and other important 19th century French etchers. This original etching is also listed under the title " (Les Blanchisseuses A Antibes) |

Jean Meissonier: Jean Louis Ernest Meissonier was one of France's most popular painters
of the late nineteenth century. At an early age he moved to Paris and
studied art under Leon Cogniet. He first exhibited at the Paris Salon
in 1836. Fifty years later the Salon held a special, retrospective exhibition
of his art. |
|
Famous for his figure studies and military scenes, Jean Meissonier
was decorated by the Legion d'honneur (1846) and named a member of the
Institut (1861). He was also the first artist to receive the Grand Cross
from the Legion of Honour. Today major museums in Amsterdam, St. Petersburg,
London, Paris, Munich, Luxembourg and Versailles include his paintings
in their permanent collections. The largest collections of Meissonier's
art are found in the Wallace Collection, London, and in the Musee d'Orsay,
Paris. |
