Leon Emmanuel Joseph Simon de Laborde 'Leon Laborde': An
important early nineteenth century French artist, art scholar, diplomat
and archaeologist, Leon Laborde is known through both his writings and
his art. In the early 1830’s he traveled in the Orient and wrote
several books on this subject, particularly on Petra and its ruins. In
1833 Leon Laborde published his "Essais de gravures pour servir a une histoire
de la gravure en bois". This was the first French examination of contemporary
wood engraving methods. Leon Laborde continued to write other books on
printmaking and its artists such as, "Histoire de la Gravure en maniere
Noire" (1839). Most of his original wood engravings and lithographs date
from this decade. |
|
On his return from his Eastern travels, Leon Laborde was appointed
a secretary to the French Embassy, holding posts in London, The Hague
and Cassel. He also worked in Rome, as a deputy under Chateaubriand.
In 1842 Leon Laborde was elected as a member of the French Academy. He
was afterwards appointed Keeper of the Sculpture at the Louvre. Finally,
in 1856, Laborde gained the post of Keeper of the Archives of the Empire
and Senate. |
|
During the early nineteenth century the art of wood engraving
was virtually nonexistent in France. In England Thomas Bewick (the inventor
of wood engraving) had founded a strong tradition of talented artists
in this new medium. In France, however, wood engraving was first used
almost exclusively as an economical means of reproducing images in books
and journals. Very few French artists explored the unique capabilities
of this art form until the early twentieth century. The wood engravings
of Leon Laborde are clearly an exception. One might surmise that his
early diplomatic posting in London brought him into contact with the
art of Bewick and his pupils. |
