Kawanabe Kyosai (Gyosai)

Kawanabe Kyosai Gyosai - The Style of Painting of Kano Koi from the Kyosai Gadan Kyosai's Account of Painting

The Style of Painting of Kano Koi from the Kyosai Gadan (Kyosai's Account of Painting)

An original woodcut by Kawanabe Kyosai (also spelt, Gyosai), The Style of Painting of Kano Koi was printed and published in 1887 by Iwamoto Shun for his autobiographical treatise of painting and drawing, Kyosai Gaden (Kyosai's Account of Painting). This important Meiji era publication was produced in four volumes and divided into two parts. Part One presents Kyosai's thoughts and theories on painting and Part Two is a biography of the artist compiled by his pupil, Baitei Gaso. Crucial to Part One was Kyosai's belief that students of art had to master the essentials of brush technique (hitsui) by studying the techniques of master artists, both past and present. As such, Kyosai created woodcuts imitating the drawing styles of such masters as Bunsei, Shubun, Maruyama Okyo, Nagasawa Rosetsu, Kitagawa Utamaro, Kose Kanaoka, Taisu and Kano Koi, who lived from roughly 1569 to 1636. In total the complete book contains approximately 165 illustrative woodcuts, 99 in Part One and 66 in Part Two. In this work Kyosai gained great fame for his almost uncanny ability to capture the style of any Japanese artist or school of painting. As well, The Style of Painting of Kano Koi delightfully depicts the effects of joy and laughter. This is a beautiful, original example of the woodcut art created by the Japanese artist, Kawanabe Kyosai.

Title: The Style of Painting of Kano Koi from the Kyosai Gadan
Artist: Kyosai, Kawanabe, 'Gyosai' (Japan, 1831 - 1889)
Date: 1887
Publisher: Iwamoto Shun
Medium: Original Japanese Woodcut
Source: Kyosai Gadan (Kyosai's Account of Painting)
Note: Kawanabe Kyosai (Gyosai): During the 1840’s and 1850’s the famous warrior and legend woodcuts of Kuniyoshi began to play a new and vital role in the formation of Japanese art. For perhaps the first time, strong emotional and individualistic characteristics were seen. In the following Meiji era (1868 - 1912) it was left to Kuniyoshi’s two most important students to carry on and develop these themes, eventually dominating the art of their era. Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892) became the master of dramatic often violent images. By the time Yoshitoshi entered Kuniyoshi's workshop in 1850, Kawanabe Kyosai -- the most bizarre and eccentric of all Japanese artists -- had already left to foster a second career as a successful Kano school painter.
As early as 1852, Kyosai (Gyosai) became notorious for both his art and his somewhat dissolute lifestyle, particularly his abiding love for sake. Famous both as a great painter and printmaker, Kyosai's imagery was all his own. Using the figures and themes of Japanese mythology, folklore and scenes of everyday life as his genesis he created some of the most riotous imagery in the history of Japanese art. Some are bizarre, some are humorous, many are both. His art often represents a fascinating exploration of the unconscious. Most of Kyosai's woodcuts were published in smaller sized albums. Albums of note include, such works as the Kyosai Gadan (Kyosai's Treatise on Painting), woodcuts in the traditional Japanese and Chinese paintings styles, four volumes published in two parts by Iwamoto Shun (1887), Ehon Taka Kagami (Picture Book Mirror of Hawks), published by Nakamura Sasuke in five volumes in yellow wrappers (1875), Kyosai Gafu Shohen (Kyosai's Picture-Album) published in one volume by Kinkado (1880), Kyosai Donga Shohen (Sketches by Kyosai) published by Inada Genkichi (1881), Kyosai Manga Shohen (Kyosai's Rambling Drawings), published by Makino Kichibei (1881), and one of his most popular series entitled, Kyosai Hyakuzu, also spelt, 'Kyosai Hyaku-zu' (One Hundred Pictures by Kyosai), (1862-1866), which dealt with Japanese folklore, legends and proverbs ('kotowaza). The Style of Painting of Kano Koi hails from Kyosai's Treatise on Painting, the Kyosai Gadan (Kyosai's Account of Painting).
Kyosai's art was better known in the west than the work of other Meiji artists. His paintings, drawings and woodcuts were exhibited at the Vienna International Exposition in 1873 and at the Paris Exposition of 1883. Furthermore the British architect and artist, Josiah Conder (1852-1920), became a pupil of Kyosai (also spelt, Gyosai) in the 1880's and in 1911 published his important book, Paintings and Studies by Kawanabe Kyosai.
Perhaps because of his reputation in the west, Kyosai’s Kyosai Gadan was the first manual of its time to provide English translations of the Japanese text. The English titles appeared in the upper margin. This particular impression lacks the English title and thus the upper margin has probably been trimmed.
This original Kyosai (Gyosai), woodcut entitled, The Style of Painting of Kano Koi hails from Kawanabe Kyosai's autobiographical treatise of painting and drawing, Kyosai Gaden (Kyosai's Account of Painting) published in 1887 by Iwamoto Shun. In total the complete book contains approximately one hundred and sixty five illustrative woodcuts, ninety nine in Part One and sixty six in Part Two. In this work Kyosai gained great fame for his almost uncanny ability to capture the style of any Japanese artist or school of painting. As well, The Style of Painting of Kano Koi delightfully depicts the effects of joy and laughter. It is a striking, original example of the famous woodcut art created by the Japanese artist, Kawanabe Kyosai.
Complete copies of the Kyosai Gadan are found the collections of Harvard University, the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco and the British Museum. The British Museum also lists an incomplete set of Kyosai's treatise on painting, the Kyosai Gadan, dating from 1879 (please see their museum numbers 1979,0305,0.390 and 0A+,0.24.1-2.) All other institutions list the first edition date as 1887. If this earlier edition exists it would be interesting to discover whether or not it too provides the English titles.
