It is signed by the artists in block. This woodcut is constructed of multiple images and designed by different artists. To the right is a portrayal of the famous ghost of Oiwa, designed by Kunisada. To the left is an image of a view of the flowers of Edo and famous meeting place in Edo, designed by Sadahide. To the top is an illustration of the ghost story of Yotsuya-Kaidan, designed by an unknown artist. "Yotsuya: Actor Bando Hikosaburo V as the Ghost of Oiwa" is a fine, original example of the important woodcut art created by the Japanese artists, Kunisada and Sadahide. It is also a striking example of art depicting supernatural apparitions commonly known in Japan as Yokai.

Note:	Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III): Perhaps the best known printmaking artist of his day, Kunisada apprenticed under Toyokuni. Kunisada's earliest woodcuts date from 1809 and he quickly established himself as a master of figure and character studies. Because of his chronological changes of signatures, Kunisada's woodcuts are not difficult to date: his first works were signed, 'Ichiyusai Kunisada', and bear the definite influence of his master. About 1813, he began inscribing his woodcuts, 'Gototei Kunisada', and from 1827, he adopted the 'go' or 'ga' suffix. Finally, in 1844, he took his deceased master's name -- a not uncommon practice in Japanese art -- and signed his works, 'Toyokuni'. Yotsuya: Actor Bando Hikosaburo V as the Ghost of Oiwa bears the artist's 'Toykuni' signature in the block to the lower right.
	When the Western world first discovered the artistic value of the Japanese woodcut (c. 1865) it was the designs of Kunisada which primarily attracted the greatest attention. His superb use of line, perspective and colour influenced an entire legion of European artists. Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler, Van Gogh, Vuillard, Bonnard and many others all owed a considerable deal to the splendid creations of this Japanese master of the woodcut.
	Utagawa Sadahide: A pupil of Kunisada, Sadahide lived and worked in both Edo (Tokyo) and Yokohama. A fine craftsman, Sadahide was one of the first artists to exhibit his work outside of Japan. In 1867 ten of his woodcuts were shown at the Universal Exposition, Paris. He was also among the first Japanese artists to seriously explore Western elements within his art. Thus in this depiction of an Edo meeting place (to the left) we see a deliberate attempt to build perspective between the foreground and background. Such an element was completely alien to Japanese art. Sadahide also worked in Yokohama, designing woodcuts of Westerners and their ships. In many ways Sadahide's art is seen as a precursor to the woodcuts of the Meiji era.
