Portrait of a Nobleman with a Fan and a Flute |
Artist: |
Kunisada I, Utagawa 'Toyokuni III' (Japan, 1786 - 1864) |
Date: |
Between 1820 & 1827 |
Medium: |
Original Japanese Woodcut |
Note: |
Utagawa Kunisada I: Perhaps the best known printmaking
artist of his day, Kunisada apprenticed under Toyokuni. Kunisada's earliest
woodcuts date from 1809 and he quickly established himself as a master
of figure and character studies. Because of his chronological changes
of signatures, Kunisada's woodcuts are not difficult to date: his first
works were signed, 'Ichiyusai Kunisada', and bear the definite influence
of his master. About 1813, he began inscribing his woodcuts, 'Gototei
Kunisada', and from 1827, he adopted the 'go' or 'ga' suffix. Finally,
in 1844, he took his deceased master's name -- a not uncommon practice
in Japanese art -- and signed his works, 'Toyokuni'. |
|
Generally, most of Kunisada's greatest woodcuts are
the full-length portrayals of men and women he created during the period
he signed with the name, 'Gototei Kunisada'. This is clearly seen in
this original woodcut which was published between 1820 and 1827. Portrait of a Nobleman with a Fan and a Flute is simply a masterpiece of line, color and movement
and represents the best of early nineteenth century Japanese art. Unfortunately,
woodcuts from this early period in such good condition as this original
example are quite scarce. |
|
When the Western world first discovered the artistic
value of the Japanese woodcut (c. 1865) it was the designs of Kunisada
which primarily attracted the greatest attention. His superb use of
line, flattened perspective and colour influenced an entire legion of
European artists. Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler, Van Gogh, Vuillard, Bonnard
and many others all owed a considerable deal to the splendid creations
of this Japanese master of the woodcut. |
|
This original Utagawa Kunisada woodcut may well represent a leading member of the Minamoto clan as the crest or emblem (mon, kamon, mondokoro, monsho) , visible on the nobleman's kimono depicts the Sasarindo kamon, a design with five bamboo leaves below three gentian flowers (trumpet-shaped flowers with five petals). The prominent Minamoto clan of the Heian period led by the great warrior, Minamoto no Yoriitomo are descendants of the Imperial family. They are related to the Genji clan who are also descendants of the Imperial family, however the kamon for the Genji clan is the Wheel motif (wheel with eight spokes). During this period, it was not unusual, as it was often recognized as a class distinction, for family members to depicted the clan kamon or variations of it on their garments, household items, armours, and weapons. This is a striking, original example of the woodcut art of Utagawa Kunisada I. |
