Utagawa Kunisada I (Toyokuni III): Perhaps the best known printmaking artist
of his day, Utagawa Kunisada apprenticed under Toyokuni. Kunisada's earliest woodcuts
date from 1809 and he quickly established himself as a master of figure
and character studies. Because of his chronological changes of signatures,
Kunisada's woodcuts are not difficult to date: his first works were signed,
'Ichiyusai Kunisada', and bear the definite influence of his master. About
1813, he began inscribing his woodcuts, 'Gototei Kunisada', and from 1827,
he adopted the 'go' or 'ga' suffix. Finally, in 1844, he took his deceased
master's name -- a not uncommon practice in Japanese art -- and signed
his works, 'Toyokuni'. Actors Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Kincho's Son (Segare) Kinko, Seki Sanjuro III as Iyam (Playing Hagoita) represents a fine example from this, Utagawa Kunisada's last
segment of artistic creativity. |
|
When the Western world first discovered the artistic
value of the Japanese woodcut (c. 1865) it was the designs of Kunisada
which primarily attracted the greatest attention. His superb use of
line, perspective and colour influenced an entire legion of European
artists. Toulouse-Lautrec, Whistler, Van Gogh, Vuillard, Bonnard and
many others all owed a considerable deal to the splendid creations of
this Japanese master of the woodcut. |

Representations of both children and games are quite uncommon in traditional Japanese art. Here we see two children and their father on their way to play a game of Hanetsuki. In this scene, the man and the children are holding ornate Japanese wooden paddles called Hagoita. During the Edo era, the Hagoita (Battledore) was traditionally used to play the Japanese game of Hanetsuki. It is played by hitting shuttlecocks back and forth, in many ways resembling the western game of badminton without a net. The early Hagoita paddles were made of wood, lacquered, painted, then covered with raised fabric and other materials giving them a three dimensional effect. The images featured highly decorative portraits of famous kabuki actors, however, these beautifully painted Hagoita now portray a variety of striking images, from beautiful women, wrestlers, anime characters, 19th century to contemporary actors, New Year's symbols, etc. Today's Hagoita paddles are still beautifully crafted in the same manner, but most often, they are intended to be used as ornamental objects and talismans for girls to ward off evil spirits. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston includes an impression of this original woodcut in its collection, Accession Number, 11.44210a-c. |

Printed upon mid nineteenth century mulberry (rice paper)
and with full margins as published between 1844 and 1860 Omiya Kyujiro. Containing
some silkworm and binding holes in the outer margins as well as slight
scuffing to the corners, else a strong impression bearing all the fine
lines and vibrant colours of a very early printing. Altogether, this
woodcut of Actors Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Kincho's Son (Segare) Kinko, Seki Sanjuro III as Iyam (Playing Hagoita) represents a prime example
of the original art of Utagawa Kunisada. |
