Alena Kucerova: A leading twentieth century Czech
printmaker, Alena Kucerova studied at the Superior School of Applied
Arts and the School of Graphic Arts, in Prague. In the late 1960's and
early 1970's, she lived in New York and worked at the Pratt Graphics
Art Center. Landscape was probably created at this famous printmaking
workshop. |

During her career, Alena Kucerova's original graphics have
been exhibited in Tokyo, Paris, Essen, Leghorn, Rome, Amsterdam, New
York, Berlin and Mexico City. In 1981 she participated in the exhibition,
'Eleven Contemporary Artists from Prague', which toured various American
institutions including Michigan University and New York University.
Her intaglio prints have also received numerous awards and prizes at
world wide print biennials. Today the art of Alena Kucerova is found
in many public collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New
York. |

Landscape originates from the collection of
Roger Trlak and bearing his inventory number, 'T-789', on the verso.
Roger Trlak (1934-1975) established the commercial art company of Martin-Trlak
in Chicago. In 1972 he also opened the RST Gallery in Scottsdale, Arizona
where he exhibited not only his own large collection of mostly contemporary
art but also held important exhibitions of many modern artists. These
Included such major American and international printmakers as Joseph
Hirsch, Luigi Lucioni, Birgit Skiold, Alena Kucerova and Paul Wunderlich. Among Trlak's
closest friends in the arts community were Raphael Soyer, Ivan Albright
and Hans Burkhardt. Their original prints and paintings were constantly
exhibited at the RST Gallery until it was closed in 1975 due to Trlak's
untimely death. |

Printed upon hand-made paper and with full, deckled
margins as printed in New York in 1971 in the limited and signed edition
of 100 impressions. Signed, dated and numbered, '58/100' by the artist
in pencil along the lower margin. A fine impression and in excellent condition throughout. Landscape represents a prime, original
example of the Czech art of Alena Kucerova. |
