Alfred Kubin

Rauhnacht (Wild Night)

Alfred Kubin's "Rauhnacht" (Wild Night) is an original lithograph printed upon thick wove paper and with full margins as published in 1925. This particular Alfred Kubin lithograph depicts a weary soldier pushing a wheelbarrow weighed down by a richly attired woman holding a revolver. Pigs flank both sides of this unsightly procession. There is an individual trapped in a well behind them. Equally fantastic events fill the background, including a peasant pursued by his plucked bird. The scene is completed by bats flying through the starry sky. Like all of his great lithographs, "Rauhnacht" (Wild Night) displays exceptional imagination and style and represents a superb example of the famous art created by the Austrian artist, Alfred Kubin.

Title: Rauhnacht (Wild Night)
Artist: Kubin, Alfred (Bohemia, 1877 - Zwickledt, Austria, 1959)
Date: 1925
Medium: Original Lithograph
Note: Alfred Kubin: A major artist of both German Expressionism and Austrian Secessionism, Alfred Kubin attended the School of Applied Arts in Salzburg, in 1891 and 1892. Throughout the remainder of the decade he studied both art and photography and completed his education at the Fine Arts Academy of Munich in 1901. Alfred Kubin's first published print dates from 1903. In 1909 he became a member of Munich's Neue Kunstler Vereinigung and in 1912 he joined the influential Blaue Reiter.
Despite his strong participation in many of the leading German and Austrian movements of the day, it is impossible to define Alfred Kubin's art under a specific label. Sometimes satirical, often disturbing and humorous, his graphic art is usually charged with psychological and visionary qualities. In total Alfred Kubin created over 160 highly imaginative lithographs.
'Rauchnacht' (Wild Night) is actually the title Alfred Kubin gave for thirteen original lithographs he created in 1925. Each of these independent works of art are united by the general theme of wild night scenes. Here, a wizened and exhausted soldier pushes a Wheelbarrow made heavy by a richly attired woman holding a revolver in her hand. Pigs flank both sides of this macabre procession. Behind them a pained individual is trapped in a well. He, like the soldier, seems doomed to suffer. Perhaps they are both prisoners of love. Equally fantastic events fill the background, including a peasant pursued by his plucked bird. The scene is completed by bats flying through the starry sky. Like all Alfred Kubin's great lithographs, Rauhnacht (Wild Night) displays outstanding imagination and style.
