Attributed to Conrad Faber von Kreuznach (Konrad Faber von Creuznach), this original woodcut entitled, A Messenger Appears to Hannibal in Carthage was printed and publisher in Mainz by Johann Schoeffer in 1523. It hails from a German translation of Titus Livy's classical text, Roman History (Romische Historien by Titi Livij). Although earlier editions exist, this. and over one hundred and fifty woodcuts, were designed for this specific edition. Conrad Faber von Kreuznach, formerly known as the 'Master of the Holzhausen Portraits', is generally credited with the design of these woodcuts.

The famous Carthaginian general, Hannibal (247 - 183 B. C.), occupies a large place in ancient Roman history. He was Rome's most formidable adversary, boldly leading his army across the Pyrenees, the Rhone and the Alps to wage an eighteen year war (the Second Punic War) in Italy itself. After his eventual defeat Hannibal returned to Carthage to restore and reform his empire. Rome, however, demanded his surrender. A Messenger Appears to Hannibal in Carthage might possibly portray this scene. This is a striking, original example of the German Renaissance woodcut and the art of Conrad Faber von Kreuznach.

Note:	Artist Attribution: Conrad Faber von Kreuznach (Konrad Faber von Creuznach): A German Renaissance painter and designer of woodcuts, Conrad Faber von Kreuznach (or, von Creuznach) first appears to have worked in Mainz from about 1517 to 1523. Most of his work there was designing woodcuts for books for the famous Mainz publishing house of Peter Schoeffer (who apprenticed under Gutenberg and worked as a printer and publisher from approximately (1457 to 1502) and his son, Johann Schoeffer (1456-1531).
	By 1526 Conrad Faber von Kreuznach had moved to Frankfurt and first worked under the painter, Hans Fyoll (1460-1531). Through marriage, von Kreuznach gained his Frankfurt citizenship in 1538. Unfortunately the Reformation was under full swing at this time and the major patron for all artists, the Catholic Church, was no longer available. Thus Conrad Faber von Kreuznach spent most of his remaining career in serious debt. In 1547 he was forced to work as an official inspector of the city
	Until quite recently von Kreuznach was known only under the name of 'Master of the Holzhausen Portraits'. Indeed, apart from his many woodcuts, his best known art is the portraits of Frankfurt's wealthier citizens.
	Titus Livius: Although Titus Livius (c. 59/64 BC – 17AD) was born in Patavium, (Padua), in the north of Italy, he lived a large part of his adult life in Rome. Livy was the great historian of Republican Rome. His celebrated history of ancient Rome, Ab Urbe Condita (‘From the Founding of the City’) was written in Latin during the reign of Augustus. The work begins with the earliest legends of Rome before its foundation in 753 BC and ends around 9BC. This famous author, is also known as (Titus Livy / Titus Livius / Titi Liuij / Titi Liuii / Titi Livii / Tito Livio). 	This original woodcut and its accompanying letterpress was printed and published in Mainz by Johann Schoffer (Johannes Schoeffer) for the 1523 German edition of Titus Livy's Roman History ('Romische Historien', 'Romische Historie' written by Titi Livij). The woodcut depicts A Messenger Appearing to Hannibal in Carthage. The book was in great demand in Germany and translated editions appeared in 1505, 1507, 1514, 1518, 1523, 1530, 1533, 1538, 1541, 1546, 1551, 1557, 1559 and so on. It is now generally assumed that the more than one hundred and fifty woodcuts that appeared in this edition were designed by Conrad Faber von Kreuznach. The first two editions translated into German were published in Strasburg in 1505 and 1507.
	Most of the images in this edition of Romische Historien are, in fact, two separate woodcuts, joined within the central column. Such a practice was not unusual in the art of the early, illustrated Renaissance book, as the blocks could be rearranged to create other images and scenes.
