Tsukioka Kogyo

Tsukioka Kogyo - A Waterfowl Study Mallard Ducks and Flowers

A Waterfowl Study (Mallard Ducks & Flowers)

Tsukioka Kogyo's original woodcut, A Waterfowl Study Mallard Ducks and Flowers is printed on late nineteenth century Japanese mulberry paper and with full margins as published in 1898 by Daikikuya. The scene depicts two birds resting in a pond with a flowering branch hanging just above them. This original woodcut represents a superb example of the late Meiji art created by the Japanese artist, Tsukioka Kogyo.

Title: A Waterfowl Study (Mallard Ducks & Flowers)
Artist: Kogyo, Tsukioka (Japan, 1869 - 1927)
Date: 1898
Medium: Original Japanese Woodcut
Publisher: Daikikuya
Note: Tsukioka Kogyo: Kogyo holds an important place in late Meiji art. The stepson of the great Yoshitoshi, Kogyo studied under this master in his youth. Later, he was a pupil of both Fuko and Gekko. Specializing in scenes from the Noh Theatre, history, contemporary life and bird and flower designs, Tsukioka Kogyo built a strong reputation for his brilliant use of colours and especially, his striking design concepts. No other Japanese artist of the woodcut had quite his mastery in the uses of space and line. This is clearly shown in this original woodcut.
The woodcuts of the final decades of the Meiji era (1868 - 1912) are among the most distinctive and innovative in the history of Japanese art. The introduction of Western styles and influences (c. 1865) created a revolution in the woodblock print. Beginning with the art of Yoshitoshi, bold colour patterns and equally bold designs began to dominate the Japanese woodcut.
A Waterfowl Study (Mallard Ducks & Flowers), like most of Kogyo’s designs, was published as a fine art print, and, although edition numbers were never listed at this time, it was probably published in less than an edition of two hundred impressions. Such subtle graduations of line and colour would not yield a larger edition.
